It's that time of the year again, when we look back and check out the most popular streaming movies and TV shows in Australia based on data collected by streaming search engine JustWatch. Data includes subscription streaming as well as transactional streaming titles.
No surprise that Avatar: The Way of Water (download 4K trailer) was the most streamed movie of the year, even though according to our streaming review, the small screen isn't the best way to watch this epic movie.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (also on Binge, download 4K trailer) was second, again not a surprise given the film's stellar box office performance.
Disney and Marvel have had a bad year at the box office, and so the only Marvel entry in the top 10 was perhaps Marvel's best Disney-based movie of the year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (download 4K, 8K trailer), in third place. For non Disney owned Marvel movies, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (also on Binge, download 4K trailer) was closely behind in 4th.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (also on Amazon Prime Video, download 4K trailer), another of the year's hits, was 5th.
Probably the only real surprise in the top 10, in terms of relatively poor box office performance at least, was The Menu (download 4K trailer), which was 6th.
"Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" (download 4K trailer), "Elemental" (download 4K trailer), "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" (download 4K trailer), and "Creed III" (download 4K trailer) rounded off the top 10.

It's always a bit harder to predict which TV shows will be in the top 10 for the year, but the fact that The Last of Us was top was an easy one to guess.
"Ted Lasso" (download season 3 4K trailer) was second, while the eagerly awaited last episodes of Succession helped it to 3rd place.
Netflix's Wednesday was an unexpected hit in the dying months of 2022, and its popularity stretched to 2023, earning it a 4th place finish. Similarly, the second season of The Bear was one of the most talked about in 2023, and it earned a 10th place finish.
Other surprises in the top 10 include "The Rookie" in 7th and The Summer I Turned Pretty in 9th.
Long term favourites "Outlander" (6th) and "South Park" (8th) were the other two in the top 10.
