It's that time of the year again, when we look back and check out the most popular streaming movies and TV shows in Australia based on data collected by streaming search engine JustWatch. Data includes subscription streaming as well as transactional streaming titles.

2022 was the year of recovery for the movie industry, and one of consolidation for streaming. Let's take a look at the most popular movies and TV shows for streaming in the past year.

Movies:

The Batman was the year's most-streamed movie. You might have expected Paramount+'s "Top Gun: Maverick" to be top given that it was 2022's biggest movie, and it's worth noting that "The Batman" had a few months head start on the new Top Gun movie, and so it had to settle for 4th place.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was second, again, it had time on its side having been released much earlier than most of the other movies in the top 10.

The rest of the top 10, as you can see below, was mostly expected. Notable mentions go to the indie film effort Everything Everywhere All at Once, in 5th, and probably the movie with the smallest box office in the top 10, The Northman. It just shows that some movies do underperform at the box office, but can still become a favourite on streaming.

Television:

Netflix will be pleased to see Stranger Things sitting proudly at the top of the most popular streaming TV shows of 2022 chart.

House of the Dragon finished in second-place, which will please HBO and its show-cancelling masters, Warner Bros. Discovery. And it settles once and for all the debate as to whether "Dragons" will beat The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - the Amazon big-budget spectacle ended up being 4th, which is still not bad for a debut series.

Euphoria was third, a terrific performance for a show that's not getting the same hype as some of the others in the top 10.

And notable mention goes to Netflix's Wednesday - in 5th place despite only being released in late November, "Severance" on Apple TV+ getting 6th place, and a 10th place finish for Bridgerton.
