Amazon Prime Video's share of the crowded Australian streaming market grew at the expense of some of the other streaming services, but all things considered, everyone held their ground in the second quarter of 2022.
Thanks to data provided by streaming search engine JustWatch, we can finally see just how well each streaming service is doing in Australia for the second quarter of 2022.
Following last quarter's growth, Amazon Prime Video continued the upward momentum, growing market share by another 2%. This means that streaming service that comes "free" with Amazon's free shipping subscription service grew its market share from 17% to 21% in just six months - the Amazon juggernaut is hard to stop!
But the market share rise has to come from somebody's loss, and Disney+, Stan, and Paramount+ all recorded a 1% drop in market share. Bucking the trend was Binge, which grew from 8% to 9%. Australia's biggest streamer, Netflix, remained steady at 28% market share.
It's worth noting while each streamers slice of the pie has decreased, the size of the pie (the total number of subscribers in Australia) may have increased, and so a drop in market share does not have to translate into a drop in the number of subscribers.
In terms of changes in market share through the first six months of 2022, this is reflected in the second set of graphs shown below:
Amazon Prime Video's clear upwards trend is quite visible in the above graph, as is Stan's downward trajectory, but the others were all up and down.
