Netflix USA: What's New in August 2018

The last month of winter is finally here in Australia (at least for those not in the sub-tropical climate zones - lucky bastards!), so one more month of soft couches, warm blankets and nights spent bingeing away. Of course, it's right in the middle of summer in the US (lucky yank bastards), so I'm not sure if it's prime bingeing season for them as it is for us. Read on to find out what's new in store for the US version of Netflix for August, 2018.

For Australians (or non USA residents really) that want to access the US version of Netflix, which has if not more content, then at least different content than the local version, the best way to do that is described in our updated guide here. Sure, there are other ways, cheaper ways, but none more reliable than what we have tested (and what we are actually using for ourselves).

While Netflix's library is out of sync geographically, there are still a lot of the same additions regardless of where you are, especially when it comes to Netflix originals. And so this article focuses on content that you won't get in Australia or hasn't been covered by our 'Netflix Australia: What's New in August' article, and so a quick glance of that article is recommended as well.

The big new thing coming to Netflix has to be Matt Groening's new series, 'Disenchantment'. While this one is also available in Australia (since it's a Netflix Original), and despite what I've just written above, it's worth mentioning again as this is the first new series from Groening since 'Futurama'. Said to be a cross between 'The Simpsons' and 'Game of Thrones', this animated series is set in medieval times and follows the adventures of rebellious Princess Bean. The entire season 1 is available to stream from August 17.

Other TV highlights include the second season of 'Ozark' (August 31), 'The 100' season 5 (August 15), and 'The Good Place' season 2 (coming August 28, this season has already been streaming on Australian Netflix for some time - lucky us!)

There are some pretty good movies streaming on Netflix in August as well, although nothing much in the "very new" category. What is in the "very new" category is the Netflix Original 'To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before' (August 17), and it might be one of those hits that catches us all by surprise. Based on a best selling novel (always a good indicator), this teen romance film seems to have all the typical ingredients, but if it's anything like the book, it should be a real treat.

Other classic movies being added in August include the always watchable 'Stripes' (August 1), the Coen brothers' impressive 'No Country for Old Men' (August 11), and then there's 'Gran Torino' (August 1), released at a time when you thought that Clint Eastwood's grumpy racist old man character was a supreme piece of acting that bore no resemblance to the actual man.

As usual, there are lots of good content leaving Netflix in August as well, including 'Finding Dory' (August 1) and the very funny and full of heart 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' (August 16).

Here's a complete list of everything that's coming and going in August.
