With more movies and classic TV shows being added, Hulu has positioned themselves as a serious alternative to Netflix, and not just a catch-up service for the latest TV shows. It's a new month and so it's time again to take a look at what's going to be happening on Hulu for the month of July.
To watch Hulu here in Australia, you'll need a geo-unblocking service, which also allows you to access all the latest TV shows and movies on Hulu. There are many geo-unblocking services, but with increased scrutiny, we can only recommend one particular service, and you can read about it all here. The same subscription also allows you to sign up to and watch US Netflix, and dozens of other streaming services from around the world.
While Hulu started out as a catch up service, it's movie offering is quite solid these days, and not that far behind the likes of Netflix and Amazon, if at all. Case in point, the highlight of this month's new release is actually a movie, a fairly recent one at that, Darren Aronofsky's 'Mother!' (August 26), starring Jennifer Lawrence, it's been described as a horror movie with a difference, and that difference is not to everyone's liking though.
Other movie highlights include the well received sports drama 'Borg Vs McEnroe' (August 10) and Chinese big budget fantasy film 'The Monkey King 3' (August 15).
Showing that they can documentaries too, the Hulu original 'Crime & Punishment' (August 24) looks into the discriminatory practices of the NYPD and has been making some buzz of late. For a classic documentarty, 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi' (August 23) should sate your appetite in more than one way.
Classic movie additions include 'The Hunt for Red October', 'The Hurt Locker', 'Pretty Woman', and in the relatively new category of "should we still like this movie", 'The Usual Suspects'.
Actual TV additions are quite light due to TV off season in the US, but Bachelor in Paradise: season 5 and a new series, 'Castaways', both premiering on August 8, should please reality show fans. The latter is a show similar to "Survivor', but with a twist - the contestants think they're the only one on the island, but they're not!
As usual, there are some quality content leaving Hulu at the end of August, including 'Brokeback Mountain', 'My Left Foot', 'Trainspotting', 'Primal Fear' and 'Rain Man'.
