It may be winter here in Australia, but it's the heart of summer in the good ol' US of A and as the country celebrates its birthday, Netflix celebrates the fact that it's another month and that more goodies are going to be added to Netflix's library.
For Australians (or non USA residents really) that want to access the US version of Netflix, which has if not more content, then at least different content than the local version, the best way to do that is described in our updated guide here. Sure, there are other ways, cheaper ways, but none more reliable than what we have tested (and what we are actually using for ourselves).
While Netflix's library is out of sync geographically, there are still a lot of the same additions regardless of where you are, especially when it comes to Netflix originals (everything except for Arrested Development apparently - damn you, Foxtel!). And so this article focuses on content that you won't get in Australia or hasn't been covered by our Netflix Australia: What's New in July article, and so a quick glance of that article is recommended.
Okay, disclaimers and blatant promotional materials out of the way, let's take a look at what's new in July on the US version of Netflix.
For TV, there's a bunch of "season 8's" coming this month for no other reason than the fact that these shows were all launched at around the same time, 8 years ago. And it was a good year too, with 'Shameless: Season 8' (July 28), 'Blue Bloods: Season 8' (July 1), and 'Hawaii Five-O: Season 8' (July 1) all arriving this month. All great shows, but my personal fave is 'Shameless' - dysfunctional families don't come more dysfunctional than the Gallaghers, but boy, are they an interesting bunch of what!
There are also new season of 'Madam Secretary (Season 4)' and 'NCIS (Season 15)', both arriving on July 1.
Looking at movies now, there aren't any big new blockbusters coming this month, but that's hardly what Netflix is about these days. Instead, you're treated to classics such as the Jurassic Park trilogy (Jurrasic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III), all arriving on July 1.
Other personal recommendations include the heartbreaking 'Blue Valentine' (July 5), and the charming 'An Education' (July 22) - Carey Mulligan, in my opinion, is very much underrated and she has starred in some absolutely fantastic movies ('Never Let Me Go', 'Drive', 'The Great Gatsby', 'Inside Llewyn Davis' and 'Mudbound', to name a few), 'An Education' being one of her earlier films.
Ben Affleck's first directed feature film, 'Gone Baby Gone' (July 12), is also a fantastic crime mystery film, regardless of what you think of the director and star actor's (brother Casey Affleck) sexual harassment controversies.
As usual, some quality films have left/are leaving Netflix in July, including 'Breakfast at Tiffany’s', the 'Lethal Weapon' movies and the always funny 'Tropic Thunder'.
