Netflix Australia: What's New in July 2018

Promo for El Chapo Season 3
Sean Fang Sat, 30/06/2018 - 16:25

We're formally going into the second half of 2018 (can't believe 2018 is half way done already), and with winter hitting most of the Australian states (and hitting it hard, sometimes), now is never a better time to Netflix and chill at home, under a warm blanket with a hot drink. Netflix seems to understand this and we have a heap of old, new and returning stuff to watch in July.

In TV, we have several eagerly anticipated returning series to look forward to including Orange Is the New Black: Season 6 (27/7/2018), Anne with an E: Season 2 (6/7/2018) and 'Suits: Season 7' (13/7/2018). The latter, in particular, will be of interest to royal watchers, as it's the last season to feature Meghan Markle, aka the Duchess of Sussex.

There's one returning series that's achieved immense success in the US at least, and it's not even in English. 'El Chapo: Season 3' (release date to be announced) again takes us back into the world of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán as he takes on his enemies and expands his drug empire. The companion-ish doco series 'Drug Lords: Season 2' (10/7/2018) may be worth a watch too.

And for those still reveling in World Cup fever, you might want to take a look at the docu-series 'First Team: Juventus: Part B' (6/7/2018).

There are equally a number of high quality movies being added (and sometimes, being added back) to Netflix in July. Netflix is fully embracing the 'Fast & Furious' franchise with not one but five movies coming on the first day of July. Confusing title chronology aside, make sure you make room to watch 'The Fast and the Furious', '2 Fast 2 Furious', 'The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift', 'Fast & Furious' and 'Fast Five'.

Also coming on July 1 is 'Superbad' and 'This Is the End', two films that are very different but share a similar "feel", the latter, I feel, is particular underrated. I personally felt that 'Battleship' (July 6) was quite satisfying, but it has plot holes bigger than, well, battleships and so if you can't look past them, best to not waste your time.

Also in the category of films that share a similar feel, 'Geostorm' (July 22) and The Day After Tomorrow (1/7/2018) are both worth watching, but the older film is the better of the two, no doubt.

'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (1/7/2018)' doesn't come even close to touching the original, and feels like a real missed opportunity given what really happened on Wall Street in the preceding years before the movie was released. Watching the original film (which isn't on Netflix), or even 'The Wolf of Wall Street' (which is on Netflix) are better choices, maybe.

Classic movies worth watching this month include (but is not limited to) 'The Shining' (July 15) and Legends of the Fall (1/7/2018).

Enjoy!
