Stan: What's New in July 2018
Winter is here in full force for most in Australia, but the content boffins at Stan don't believe in hibernation or other biological needs. No, they are all about the content, and for July, there are some really great stuff to look forward to.
If Stan is known for something, then it's their exclusive line-up of TV shows, both Australian and US, and one of the big ones is the Starz series 'Power'. Season 5 of the hit show premier July 1, with new episodes weekly.
Based on the novel that got made into a movie, based on the inner workings of a (we hope) fictional Hollywood, the new TV series 'Get Shorty' should offer plenty of laughs and everything else. Starring the eminently funny Chris O'Dowd ('The IT Crowd', 'Bridesmaids'), the complete season one of the show, which has already received some acclaim, is ready to stream from July 12 (and only on Stan).
Another first for Stan is 'The Second', which ironically is the first Stan Original film. The Second follows the author of a celebrated erotic memoir, whose new-found success is threatened when her best friend and muse reveals the truth behind the memoir's provenance, igniting an incendiary tale of sex, lies and betrayal. It stars Aussie favourites Rachael Blake, Susie Porter, Vince Colosimo, Martin Sacks and Susan Prior, and premiers July 20.
Moving onto other films, 'The Foreigner' (July 10) starring Jackie Chan in a very different (ie. quite serious) role and Pierce Brosnan, also in an against type role, is probably Chan's best film for quite a while (and also a SVOD exclusive for Stan). Terrorism begets family tragedy begets politics and revenge, is the film's main themes.
While not as good as the original, and certainly not as original, 'Sin City II: A Dame to Kill For' (July 21) is one that most people probably skipped based on the film's disappointing box office (waited too long for the sequel, me thinks), but it's by no means a bad film, so now you get a chance to see what you missed way back in 2014. One that you definitely missed in 2017 was 'Suburbicon' (July 24). Written by the Coen Brothers, directed by George Clooney, and starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac, you'd think this is a film that can't go wrong. But wrong it did, and poor critical reception led to its poor box office takings, which probably explains why you didn't see it either. You can see it now though, but just keep in mind the fact that it only has a 5.6 rating on IMDb.
One film that definitely does not have a ratings problem on IMDb or elsewhere, and one that was almost certainly not overlooked at the box office, is 'Slumdog Millionaire' (July 14). Watch it along with the other classic, and World Cup appropriate, 'Bend It Like Beckham' (July 7)
