Netflix USA: What's New in July 2016

Poster for Back to the Future Trilogy

We are officially half way through 2016 and officially deep in the middle of winter – Ugg boots and Netflix are the order of the day. So which titles are our foreign friends at Netflix US offering this month? Let’s take a look at some highlights.

If you’re looking to get serious with a new series, you might be out of luck in July, but those who are already invested in the quirky animation, BoJack Horseman, will be pleased to know that Season 3 arrives July 22. Starring Will Arnett as the voice of the title character, Bojack Horseman has been variously described as genius, absurd and ludicrous as well as poignant and sad. If you haven’t been introduced to the faded and now depressed 90s sitcom star that is BoJack, you now have 3 seasons to binge on.

What they lack in new series this month, Netflix sure make up for with classic movie titles. Care to revisit the magic of Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doc (Christopher Lloyd)? Back to the Future I, II and III all join the Netflix stable from the first of the month. As is true of most movie franchises, the first film was arguably the best and each subsequent addition headed slowly downhill from there but there’s still plenty to love about the adventures of young Marty, hapless Doc and their time-travelling adventures.

Still mining the vintage movie gold, it must be time to revisit Beverly Hills Cop. In his breakout role as loose cannon Detroit cop, Axel Foley, Eddie Murphy (The Nutty Professor, Shrek) is the king of one-liners and the owner of the best laugh in the business. The film doesn’t break any new ground in the cop action film genre, but Eddie Murphy at the helm offers a much needed freshness and humour. Plans for a Beverly Hills 4 have been announced but for now, you’ll have to make do with the first two films.

And if you’re really vibing the action classics, you’ll want to check out Lethal Weapon 1, 2, 3 and 4. Before Mel Gibson (Mad Max) killed his career with inebriated rants, he and Danny Glover (Brothers and Sisters) were cops, Riggs and Murtaugh, an unlikely but formidable partnership. Roger Murtaugh, a veteran cop on the brink of retirement is suddenly saddled with Martin Riggs, young and dangerously untethered after suffering the death of his wife. As they go after the bad guys together, hijinks obviously ensue.

But let’s dial down the testosterone for a second because there are some other films worth mentioning. For vintage Marilyn Monroe, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a must-see. Those looking for a book adaptation might like to check out The Lovely Bones. Starring Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) and Mark Wahlberg (Ted), the story is narrated by Susie Salmon, a young girl who has been murdered. Yes, the book was better but there are some great performances here.

Finally, check out The Big Short from July 6. Starring a fabulous cast including Ryan Gosling (Crazy, Stupid Love) and Steve Carrell (The Office), the film follows three separate but parallel stories set during the American housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s.
