Stan. kicks off the month of the new month with a homegrown original series, some exclusive premieres and some great docos thrown in for good measure. Let’s take a look at the highlights.
In its continued bid to seriously rival Netflix, Stan. this month introduce the 6-part original series, Wolf Creek. If you’ve previously had the pants scared off you by the 2005 film of the same name, then you’ll be pleased/terrified to know that serial killer Mick Taylor (played by John Jarratt) is back and up to his usual brand of terrorising American tourists in the Aussie outback. But this time, a survivor fights back. Watch as Eve, a 19-year-old whose entire family are massacred by Taylor, determines to become predator and not prey.
Stan. also offers exclusive imports including a new comedy series by Steve Carrell (The 40-year-old Virgin) and his lesser known but clearly as talented wife, Nancy. Angie Tribeca takes a satirical look at police procedurals headed up by titular character, Angie, as a lone-wolf detective with the LAPD’s elite RHCU (Really Heinous Crimes Unit). Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation) is Angie and along with her eccentric but brilliant colleagues, she must investigate the most serious of crimes from the murder of a ventriloquist to a rash of baker suicides.
For more exclusive content, check out Blunt Talk. Starring Patrick Stewart (X-Men), this comedy series centres around Walter Blunt, a British newscaster who moves to Los Angeles with his alcoholic manservant and the baggage of several failed marriages to host a talk show. When a sanctimonious Brit attempts to tell Americans how to live it can’t end well. Gorgeous Aussie veteran Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) also stars.
If you’re desperate to know what really goes on within the intensely private walls of the Church of Scientology, you’ll want to check out Scientology: The Ex Files. Interviews with former members paint a disturbing picture of life within the church. And you thought Tom Cruise was weird!
Those after new movies should take a look at Dark Places starring Charlize Theron (Monster). Based on the novel by Gillian Flynn (famous for her smash bestseller turned movie Gone Girl), Dark Places treads Flynn’s familiarly dark terrain centring on a woman dealing with the trauma of her childhood in which her mother and two sisters are murdered at the hands of her brother. But what if he is actually innocent?
World Movie fans should check out The Connection in which a French police magistrate spends years trying to take down one of the country's most powerful drug rings. Starring Jean Dujardin (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Céline Sallette (Marie Antoinette).
And finally, don’t let May pass you by without revisiting the classic slice of film excellence that is Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Christina Applegate are key players in this comedy set in the male-dominated world of 1970s news broadcasting. If you’ve never see it, now is the time.
