Stan: What's New in February 2016

Poster for Billions

February on Stan offers three exclusive premieres to Australian audiences and a host of new movies and TV series to see you through the last month of summer.

First up, the new SHOWTIME Original Series, BILLIONS, will be fast-tracked from the U.S. Starring Damian Lewis (Homeland) and Paul Giamatti (Sideways), the drama follows U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades as he attempts to bring down hedge fund king, Bobby ‘Axe’ Axelrod. It’s the ultimate power struggle playing out in New York’s infamous high finance world.

Season 2 of Better Call Saul, the prequel to Breaking Bad, arrives February 16. Fans of Breaking Bad will relish discovering just how Jimmy McGill (played by Bob Odenkirk), once a small-time attorney, slowly descends into the morally questionable Saul Goodman, aka Walter White’s crooked lawyer.

Also premiering on Feb 16, 11/22/63 is the story of an ordinary school teacher, Jake Epping (James Franco), who via a time portal is sent back to 1963 with the monumental task of preventing the assassination of J.F.K. As expected, his mission is met with complications including Lee Harvey Oswald and falling in love. This event series is delivered over 8 episodes.

Anyone who has followed Australian politics in the last few years will be aware of what a turbulent period it has been for the Labor Party. In this three-part series, Sarah Ferguson examines the dynamics at play during the Rudd/Gillard years in fascinating detail and includes frank accounts from both Rudd and Gillard themselves as well as other main players, some of whom are still sitting members of Parliament. It’s House of Cards without the script and Hollywood stars.

And for more Aussie entertainment, check out the Bondi Hipsters in sketch comedy, Soul Mates, and Black Comedy, the politically incorrect sketch comedy by Blackfellas. View ‘Australia and Australian culture through the comedic prism of our country’s first people’.

While there are no recent blockbuster movies added to the service in February, there are still some great titles to check out. In While We’re Young, Ben Stiller (Zoolander 2) and Naomi Watts (St. Vincent) play happily married forty-somethings, Josh and Cornelia, whose new friendship with a couple almost half their age turns their world upside down. Director-writer Noah Baumbach’s funny, witty and fast-paced exploration of relationships and the generational gap is reminiscent of Woody Allen’s earlier work.

The Golden Compass is a fantasy epic perfect for family movie night, but with a dark vein running throughout, the smallest members of the family (perhaps under 10) might want to sit this one out. Starring Nicole Kidman (Paddington) and Daniel Craig (Skyfall), parents who aren’t necessarily fans of fantasy adventures may appreciate gazing upon these two.

Fans of science and discovery are the big winners this February with a bunch of fascinating docos. In particular, keep an eye out for The Fabric of the Cosmos and Finding Life Beyond. The former follows scientists as they inch ever closer to a greater understanding of space, time and the universe. The latter reveals how scientists may soon be able to answer the burning question: are we alone in the universe?

And finally, enjoy a feast of Aussie classics when The Nugget, Crackerjack, Bad Eggs, Take Away and Boytown join the Stan line-up this month.
