The fourth quarter of 2022 saw all the major players in the Australian streaming market consolidate their hold on the market, as equilibrium seems to have occurred in the marketplace.
Thanks to data provided by streaming search engine JustWatch, we can finally see just how well each streaming service is doing in Australia for the fourth quarter of 2022.
The Big Three in streaming held onto their market share in the last quarter of 2022. Market leaders Netflix was steady at 28% of the market, with Amazon Prime Video steady at 21% and Disney+ further back at 17%.
Binge, which has been growing steadily throughout 2022, jumped level with Stan at 10%, while there were only minor movements for the other smaller players such as Paramount+ and Foxtel Now.
In terms of changes in market share through 2022, this is reflected in the second set of graphs shown below:
The biggest winners in 2022 have been Amazon Prime Video, which grew its market share from 17% to 21%; Disney+ growing from 15% to 17%; and Binge growing from 8% to 10%.
If there had to be a big loser, then that's probably Stan, which started the year at 13% and ended it at 10%. It has lost content from Paramount Global/Showtime and NBCUniversal and could lose more content if the restructured Warner Bros Discovery ever decides to launch its own streaming platform in Australia.
