We’re nearly at the end of another rollicking year, I can just about smell the warm summer breezes promising long lazy days. So when you’re finally ready for a lounge about, grab your favourite pillow and lets dive into the fantastic new releases this month.
Netflix’s first Aussie original production ‘Tidelands’ is finally here! (14 December) Starring spanish actress Elsa Pataky, Cal McTeer (Charlotte Best) returns home to fictional town Orphelin Bay, a small fishing community amongst rumours of drugs, missing people, and a mysterious group called the Tidelanders. Series continuing include ‘Travelers S3’ (14 Dec), ‘The Ranch Pt 6’ (7 Dec), ‘Fuller House’ S4 (14 Dec), ‘Nailed it! Holiday Special’ (7 Dec), and ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter's Tale’ (14 Dec). A six-part TV episodes inspired by German book ‘Perfume: Story of a Murderer,’ looks intriguing, as a trail of brutal murders lead to a group of boarding school students. (21 Dec)
For little ones/family, we have more ‘Voltron S8’ (14 Dec), ‘Super Monsters and the Wish Star’ (7 Dec), ‘Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle’ (7 Dec), ‘Angry Birds’ (22 Dec), and ‘One Direction: This is Us’ (23 Dec).
Add to this a sprinkling of anime: ‘Hero Mask’ (3 Dec), ‘Sirius the Jaeger’ (21 Dec), ‘Back Street Girls: Gokudols’ (12 Dec) (This looks the silliest, as a yakuza trio are transformed into a j pop girl band to perform and repay a debt). These aren’t rated so probably best to check when they’re out.
‘Springsteen on Broadway’’(16 Dec) - Bruce Springsteen performs acoustic versions of his music and shares personal stories. TV’s most popular host Ellen Degeneres returns to stand up in a Netflix special, ‘Relatable’ is released worldwide December 18. For something a little more serious, there’s ‘Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons: S3’, and ‘Inside the Real Narcos: S1’, (Both 14 Dec)
Netflix original content is ever impressive, with ‘Bird Box’ (21 Dec) a thriller where the survivors of a mass suicide seek sanctuary outside of their hideouts, but must press on blindfolded to protect themselves. ‘Roma’ (14 Dec) from acclaimed director Alfonso Cuarón follows a Mexican family, set in 1970s.
As if to balance out the overindulgence and excessive tinsel and sparkles on surfaces, there’s a few oldie but goodie films. ‘Carrie’ – a young sheltered girl gains telekinetic powers and unleashes them at her small town highschool prom (23 Dec), ‘Rings’ – don't watch the tape unless you want a spooky visitor, (30 Dec), ‘Paul’, where two best friends encounter an alien on a road trip, (7 Dec), and ‘Love Actually’ – yes watch it, you know you want to! (7 Dec).
If you like more recent releases, ‘Allied’ (30 Dec), sexy couple WWII operatives fall in love during a risky mission, and decide to disappear away together. Or pick ‘Hello my name is Doris’, a lonely older woman in New York who reinvents herself, and finds a new passion along the way.
