It's time again to take a look at what's been happening on Stan in the last week.
The weekly new episodes continues again on Stan now that Thanksgiving and all related hullabaloo is over. So enjoy new episodes (sometimes double new episodes) of hit shows like 'White Famous', 'SMILF', and 'The Girlfriend Experience'. For your bingeing pleasure is also the complete series of the fantastic Friday Night Lights.
There are a few more movies (and docos) that have been added this past week, and there are quite a few highlights.
Starting with some of the newer movies, the sequel to the Aussie classic may not be as good, but it's still not a bad flick by any means, so make sure to catch Red Dog: True Blue. From the United States, the political thriller Miss Sloane stars the always excellent Jessica Chastain.
Slightly older but somewhat forgotten is the Ron Howard film In the Heart of the Sea. Based on real events that inspired the novel Moby Dick, this adventure drama stars Australia's own Chris Hemsworth. Not Ron Howard's best work, but even his bad ones are still better than most.
For foreign film fans, in particular fans of Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa, the 1960 film The Bad Sleep Well is well worth your time. The somewhat overlooked classic (at least compared to other Kurosawa classics such as Seven Sumarai and Ran) tells a story of corruption and revenge in post-war Japan. There's more than a hint of Hamlet in the story.
And finally, two excellent documentaries examining two very different issues. Louis Theroux's stuff is always interesting (which is why Stan has a section dedicated to hosting his stuff, andLouis Theroux: My Scientology Movie is no different. Those that know a bit about Scientology or have watched other documentaries on it won't be too surprised by anything covered here, but it's still an interesting way to present a well discussed issue.
Whatever side you're on in Australia's refugee debate, we can all agree that the current and previous solutions have not really worked, especially from a humanitarian perspective. Chasing Asylum features interviews with many of the key figures behind Australia's refugee policies, all of whom candidly share their opinion on what has worked and what hasn't.
