We're moving officially into the second half of the year, and with winter coming into full force, there's no better time to curl up on the sofa and binge on your favourite shows and flicks. So let's take a look at all that will be happening on Stan for July.
There's plenty for TV fans, with continuing weekly new episodes of hit shows such as Twin Peaks and I'm Dying Up Here (although the US shows will take a break during the Fourth of July holiday weekend). They are joined by new show Catfish, a show from the creator of the same named documentary that chronicles the stories of couples, some of whom have been interacting for years via their screens, and what happens when they meet for the first time.
Broad City also returns, with the complete season 3 ready for instant streaming starting on the 19th.
If there has been a recent trend on Stan, then it's been its steadily growing movie library. It seems that the content boffins at Stan have been hard at work to find out what our favourite movies are and have been finding ways to add them to their library. There are so many additions, but here are some of my personal picks for the month.
Sharing a similar theme, but with vastly different real life outcomes, Zero Dark Thirty and Black Hawk Down are a must watch if you're a fan of military drama, although the two movies themselves couldn't be more different (if you're after big explosions and firefights, then Zero Dark Thirty isn't what you're after - it's more Homeland than Call of Duty).
While it's a shame Stan couldn't get hold of the new TV adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale (it will stream exclusively, and for free, on SBS On Demand), you can catch the 1990 Robert Duvall and Natasha Richardson (R.I.P) movie adaptation on Stan in July. While it's critically not as well received as the current TV series, it's still a haunting film that offers a few disturbing reflections of what might happen in the very near future.
If you're after more glimpses of Dystopian nightmare, you can't get one more nightmarish than 'The Road'. Based on the best selling novel of the same name, this film is best watched when you're not feeling particular down, as anecdotal evidence suggests this one is the movie equivalent of an anti-Prozac pill.
So if you still plan on watching The Road, it's best to follow it up with something a bit more light-hearted (almost everything is though, in comparison). Any one of the Ocean's Trilogy, Magic Mike (a great drama, despite what the trailers looks like), The Whole Nine Yards and Dark Shadows should do the trick.
If you plan on going the other way, then The Butterfly Effect and The Last of the Mohicans offers disturbing and melancholy in equal measure (and what about the fantastic score of the latter - wow!).
