Ready for another month of Netflix goodness from our friends across the pond? We’re deep in winter here in Australia and Netflix US does not disappoint with the addition of new release movies and some new series to enjoy.
First up, a new Netflix Original series, Friends from College, begins streaming from July 14. Starring Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) and Keegan-Michael Key (Playing House) as a late-30’s couple who reunite with some old college friends, the series was created by writer/actress Francesca Delbanco and her writer/director husband, Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall). Season 1 of the comedy explores relationships, nostalgia and being almost-forty over 8 half-hour episodes.
Also new in July is the Oscar-nominated film, Lion. The 2016 film stars Dev Patel as Saroo and Nicole Kidman as his adoptive mum, Sue. Saroo is separated from his family as a young boy in Calcutta, India and unable to identify himself, struggles to live on the street before being adopted by an Australian family. This is the story of adult Saroo’s quest to find the family he lost. It may not have won any of the 6 Oscars it was nominated for but Lion is a film where tissues are strongly advised. Streams from July 9.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first in a series of spin-offs for George Lucas’ mega franchise. The movie is not part of the original story but a stand-alone film set in the same world fans have come to know and love. Starring Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) as criminal turned ally of the Rebel Alliance, Jyn Erso, and Diego Luna (Blood Father) as Alliance Intelligence officer, Captain Cassian Andor. Begins streaming July 18.
But maybe you think they just don’t make movies like they used to, in which case, you can check out retro flicks like family tearjerker E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, comedy classic Police Academy or even blockbuster sensation Titanic which (scarily) celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
For a dose of quirk with your comedy, also consider Punch-Drunk Love. The 2002 film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood) represented quite the departure for its star, Adam Sandler, who had gained celebrity through his wildly popular but ultimately infantile brand of humour in films like Happy Gilmore. This film is much darker but earned Sandler critical praise. Streaming from July 1.
And finally, a new offering in the way of crime drama/thriller series, Ozark. Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) has been the go-to guy for clever comedy in recent years but here he is Marty Byrde, a financial advisor forced to move his family from urban Chicago to the decidedly more rural Missouri Ozarks after his dealings with a Mexican drug cartel go sour. You can stream the series from July 21.
Also worth watching, To The Bone, starring Lily Collins (The English Teacher) and Keanu Reeves (Point Break). The film, which centres around the treatment of a young woman dealing with an eating disorder, has attracted criticism in the media for promoting anorexia. Others claim it’s a story that must be told. Make up your own mind when it begins streaming July 14.
