Netflix Australia: What's New in April 2019

April is a lovely month. Not only is there usually a nice break in there somewhere (assuming Easter doesn't come too early), it's autumn here in Australia and it's just a lovely season. Not lovely enough to get me to stay outside and avoid bingeing hours upon hours of great television and movies though. And for those with kids, it also means school holidays and luckily, babysitter Netflix is ready to take over with some great shows for little kids, big kids, and adults who never grew up (put my hands up).

For those not completely satisfied with what you can get on the Australian version of Netflix, you can easily switch to a different Netflix region by simply using a VPN (read about our tested and recommended VPN provider here). Simply connect to another country via the VPN, for example, the United States, and you can then watch that region's Netflix complete with their own unique content without doing anything else!

Television:

Okay, the premise for this new Netflix original series sounds a little bit offensive. The synopsis reads "A gay man with mild cerebral palsy decides to rewrite his identity as an accident victim and finally go after the life he wants". I'll give Netflix the benefit of the doubt and hope that the show isn't making fun of gay people, people with disabilities and accident victims, all at the same time, and hope that it's just an interesting premise that will lead to a lot of good comedy. 'Special' premiers on April 12.

The cool/scary remake of 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' continues with 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Part 2' (5/04/2019) - this is a show not quite on the top of my "must watch list", but only because my list is very long and consists of some very old content ('House of Cards' old) - otherwise, it would be right at the top!

The USA/Canadian series 'Roman Empire' has always been a mixed bag, but for those that love ancient Roman history, the new season 'Roman Empire: Caligula: The Mad Emperor' (5/04/2019) will be a delight, especially with such as interesting subject matter.

I don't think you can find many animation fans that haven't heard of or watched 'Archer' and 'Archer: Season 9', dubbed 'Danger Island', arrives on April 26. Archer is still in a coma and so we're still living in his coma dream, this time on a dangerous island (well, duh) in the South Pacific. Hilarity and a surprising amount of nudity ensue.

Stand-up fans should check out 'Kevin Hart: Irresponsible' (2/04/2019). The comedian, fresh from his (rightful) ejection from the Oscar hosting job, is at his best in this comedy special.

Still from You vs. Wild

And I know Netflix got us all excited with that 'Black Mirror' interactive episode, but here's the next one, and it's probably not what you would have guessed. In 'You vs. Wild', you choose what paths to take that will guide Bear Grylls to either survival or disaster. Guide Bear to safety or to his doom starting on April 10.

There are some really great Original Anime coming to Netflix in April, just in time for the school holidays. Despite having existed since the '60s, the ULTRAMAN franchise didn't really become known to me, as a kid, until the 90s courtesy of syndicated TV and a horrible Super Nintendo game that did not live up to the series at all. Netflix will aim to bring in a new generation of fans to the franchise in their original anime series 'ULTRAMAN', available to stream from the first of April.

Still from Rilakkuma and Kaoru

If you have eyes then you will know of Rilakkuma, even if you don't know the name. The lovable bear is simply everywhere, but not on TV surprisingly. Netflix will fix that with new series 'Rilakkuma and Kaoru', a new stop-animation series that looks too cute for words just from the trailer alone. Start the cute overdose on April 19.

And here's one you probably didn't expect. You know that game from Google/Niantic that was somewhat popular before Pokemon Go, using almost the same game mechanics, made everyone crazy for a while? Yes, Ingress is getting its own anime series called 'Ingress: The Animation'. The title may not be very original, but the story is set to be. Stream it starting April 30.

Movies, Documentaries:

Lots of great movies coming to Netflix in April, and starting with originals, fans of Noah Centineo/Peter Kavinsky will rejoice at 'The Perfect Date', another teen rom-com that somehow Netflix has become an expert at producing. Set your hearts to throb starting April 12.

With Brie Larson currently destroying box office records in 'Captain Marvel', this little known 2017 film of her's also stars 'Captain Marvel' and Avengers alumni Samuel L. Jackson. 'Unicorn Store (5/04/2019) is not her best work according to reviews but if the premise of "a woman receives a mysterious invitation that could fulfil a childhood dream" intrigues you, then go right ahead.

The next bunch of movies are all movies that I recommend without reservation, although they vary in genre from musicals to sci-fi to great dramedies.

Starting with 'La La Land', this movie needs no introduction and didn't need a Best Picture Oscar so bad that they gave it back, but if you were like me and you think that modern musical films aren't a patch on the classics, then you might have to reconsider after watching this film, which is much more than just about singing and dancing. Rave about it after you watch it starting April 9.

A classic musical, but the latest take on film, 2012's 'Les Misérables' is a finely directed and acted film that will have you humming the catchy tunes all week long. Stream it starting April 17.

Still from Oblivion

Four other recommended films all arrive on the same day, but couldn't be more different. Romantic comedies about time travel are not common enough to become a genre in its own, but very few will do better than 'About Time'. Two other films all have a romantic theme (hope this doesn't count as a spoiler) with sci-fi/fantasy leanings. Both are excellent. 'The Adjustment Bureau' and 'Oblivion' will have you questioning your own reality, in a good way, and the latter is chock full of references to classic sci-fi movies and video games (and even the superb soundtrack by French synth-pop group M83 has a lot of cues from movies and games past and present). The final of the "Three Flavours Cornetto" trilogy (the others being 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz'), "The World's End" is a seriously funny as it is, well, a very Simon Pegg movie (17/04/2019). I'll leave it at that. Again, all are arriving on April 17. Mark it on your calendars, folks!

Still from Our Planet

And perhaps leaving the best for last, Netflix, not content with the BBC's stranglehold on beautifully captivating nature documentaries has produced 'Our Planet' and narrated by none other than Sir David Attenborough. Stream this beautiful looking 8-part documentary starting April 5.

An amazing April line-up of goodies awaits!
