Just as the cool, crisp mornings melt away and welcome sunshine, Stan in November arrives quietly with some great surprises and a bustling schedule to keep you company. Let’s dive in and look at some highlights.
Stan has cherry picked some fantastic TV series for us this month, starting with the US version of ‘No Activity’, which arrives on November 22. Cops in cars and stakeouts come with plenty of laughs, courtesy of Patrick Brammall, Tim Meadows, Jake Johnson and Amy Sedaris.
Based on a prison break in upstate New York in 2015, ‘Escape at Dannemora’ tells of two convicted murderers who escape, aided by a prison employee who was involved with both men. Directed by Ben Stiller, starring Benicio Del Toro and Patricia Arquette. Episodes released Mondays from November 19.
Charmed (1998 – 2006) Coming back to the original Halliwell sisters – Good Witches ‘Charmed ones’ Phoebe, Prue and Piper use their combined power of three to combat the forces of evil to protect their neighbours and loved ones. Starring Alyssa Milano, Shannon Doherty and Holly Marie Combs, (Rose McGowan comes in from S4)
In ‘The Bold Type’, three competitive, fierce, fantastic friends Jane, Kat, and Sutton who work at glamourous women’s magazine Scarlett, navigating their new relationships and finding their way in New York. Seasons 1 & 2 drop of November 9, and Stan will bring you Season 3 when it arrives in 2019.
In continuing series, ‘The Last Ship’, ‘The Circus’, ‘The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair’, and ‘Kidding’ draw to a close this month. We welcome new series ‘Scorpion’, ‘Hit & Miss’, ‘AP Bio’, ‘Enemies: The President, Justice & FBI’, and more.
There’s a fantastic array of movies available this month, you’ll feel spoilt for choice.
My favourite pick is ‘Carol’ (Cate Blanchette and Rooney Mara), slow paced and gently unassuming, two women forge a bond and hesitantly explore their unexpected feelings.
Close second is ‘Finding Neverland’ (2004), loosely based on Sir J M Barrie’s life story. Starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet who form an unlikely friendship, inspiring and breathing life to Peter Pan’s story. Probably the most suburban Depp incarnation I’ve ever seen.
Take a look at an earlier work from Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. Winner of a slew of Awards, including Melbourne International Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival and nominated for World Cinema at the Sundance Festival. Waititi’s directorial debut with ‘Boy’ (James Rolleston) follows a bright, light hearted 11 year old who hangs out with his estranged father (Waititi) fresh out of prison. (November 3)
Notable mentions go to Jake Gyllenhall for ‘Stronger’ (November 16), as Jeff Bauman, survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing who lost his legs and adjusts to his new life in the aftermath. If you’re in the mood for action, pick the Clint Eastwood ‘15:17 Paris’, a true story of three marines, played by themselves, who stopped the 2015 Thalys train attack (November 9), or look to ‘Den of Thieves’ (November 2), with Gerald Butler, an obsessed crooked sheriff bent on taking down a gang in this heist drama.
Especially for kids, November 1 heralds the beginning of the Christmas kids cartoons and silly season, plenty of classics such as three Flintstones offerings, couple of Looney Tunes throwbacks, and two National Lampoons to boot.
