It's both a new week, and a new month for Stan, Australia's homegrown subscription streaming platform, and so it's usually a time when lots of new stuff gets added. Usually, but not always. But as always, if you want to get a look ahead at what's going to happen for the whole of August, then make sure you check out our Stan: What's New in August article.

There's not much happening in TV other than the weekly new episode series, but new is the second season of Happy Valley.

There's definitely more happening in terms of movies, of which there are a good collection of just about every type of movie.

Somewhat underrated in my opinion is Will Smith's Hancock - a super "hero" more in the mold of Deadpool than Superman. A lot of people didn't like the movie when it came out, but I don't know why.

Now for a movie that received unanimous acclaim, the award winning Precious takes you to some dark places, but is ultimately a movie about hope and optimism. The best type of movie, really, in my opinion.

Documentary fans have a few picks as well depending on if you're a lover of film, in which case Mifune: The Last Samurai about the work of legendary Japanese director Toshiro Mifune is a must watch; or if you're an animal lover, then Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story is my pick.

World movie fans should check out the German/Danish production, Land Of Mine, which has an intriguing premise and has been very well received.
