It may be summer in the US but here in Australia, the mercury is crashing as winter makes its presence felt. It’s a perfect opportunity to check out what our friends at Netflix US have in store for the month of June.
Sense8 fans must prepare for the end. The popular sci-fi drama first hit our screens in 2015 and since then has amassed a legion of devoted fans. Their investment in the eight individuals across the globe who suddenly find themselves linked mentally will surely mean that streaming The Series Finale from June 8 will be bittersweet. Starring a talented international ensemble cast including Doona Bae, Jamie Clayton and Max Riemelt.
Joining each and every episode of the previous thirteen seasons is Season 14 of Grey’s Anatomy. The wildly popular medical drama from powerhouse TV writer/producer Shonda Rhimes has seen many a love interest come and go but Meredith Grey played by Ellen Pompeo remains the heart and soul after all these years. And Season 15 is currently in production.
Fans of the first season of GLOW will welcome Season 2’s arrival on June 29. The series centres on the private and professional lives of a group of women wrestlers. The Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling (aka GLOW) are living in 1980s Los Angeles so expect big hair and loads of shiny spandex.
Taking inspiration from the infamous hashtag oft applied to home cooking gone terribly wrong is reality series Nailed It. Each episode, contestants are tasked with recreating edible masterpieces in order to win $10,000. Of course, the twist is that these people are no Masterchef contenders. In fact, they suck royally in the kitchen. Cue hilarity. Stream season 2 from June 29.
Check out Netflix Original comedy special Nanette from Australian comedian, Hannah Gadsby – an award-winning show described by The New Yorker as “As uproariously funny as it is profoundly furious.”
Looking for new release movies to stream this month? There’s Thor: Ragnarok, touted as the funniest of the franchise thus far. Apparently Chris Hemsworth worked out a bit in preparation for his recurring role as the guy with the hammer. I don’t really know but I guess I could watch it ten times in a row to find out. Starring a terrific ensemble cast including Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Tom Hiddleston (Thor) and Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher).
Or how about Star Wars: The Last Jedi? This latest (well, if you're not counting Solo, which I guess many cinema-goers aren't) in the mega franchise really divided opinions, which makes it one of those films you're going to have to check out for yourself. Enjoy these Disney/Lucasfilm/Marvel pics while you can though, because they're not going to be so readily available on Netflix in the not too distant future.
Other movies to consider this month include The Departed, the film that finally won acclaimed director Martin Scorsese an Oscar, and The King’s Speech which also cleaned up at the 2011 Academy Awards.
Also note the arrival of inspiring documentary, He Named Me Malala. Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban for being outspoken about the importance of girls receiving an education. She survived the attack and this documentary captures her courage in the aftermath.
