Welcome to another month on Hulu. As always, there’s lots to look forward to including new seasons of popular TV series and movie trilogies and Hollywood classics to kick back and enjoy as winter settles over our great southern land.
Fans of animated series Rick and Morty should take note – season 3 of the sci-fi comedy arrives June 23. Based on the adventures of genius super scientist, Rick, and his decidedly less intelligent grandson, Morty, the show features the voice talent of co-creator Justin Roiland, and Spencer Grammer, daughter of renowned TV actor Kelsey (Frasier).
If there’s an award for Series With The Best Name then surely Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency would be a strong contender. Inspired by the novel series by hugely popular British author Douglas Adams (who also wrote The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), this TV incarnation stars Samuel Barnett (Penny Dreadful) as Dirk, a ‘holistic’ detective who investigates supernatural cases. Elijah Wood (Wilfred) is his reluctant side-kick. Stream the complete Season 2 from June 14.
And if you’re after more Elijah Wood, then you’ll want to check out the Lord of the Rings trilogy. American actor Wood is author J. R. R. Tolkien’s central character, Frodo, a simple Hobbit given the gargantuan task of destroying the One Ring and saving Middle Earth. All three movies are available to stream from June 1 but if you’re planning a binge, make sure you stock up on refreshments – these movies are looong.
There are plenty of award-winning films on offer this month including 2001’s Best Picture Oscar winner, A Beautiful Mind. Starring the New Zealand actor that everyone knows is really Australian, Russel Crowe, and the American actress who no-one disputes is actually American, Jennifer Connelly, the film is based on the life of brilliant but troubled American mathematician John Nash.
Brokeback Mountain is the heartbreaking story of two cowboys who attempt to keep their secret relationship alive in a social climate that forbids it. Starring the late Australian actor Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), and American actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Southpaw) as sheep herders Ennis and Jack, the movie garnered rave reviews and ultimately won director Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) the Oscar for Best Director in 2006.
There are movie classics to enjoy including Peter Sellers in The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) and Clint Eastwood (Dirty Harry) in Escape from Alcatraz (1979). And for a more recent cult classic, there’s Trainspotting (1996). A confronting portrait of life in the drug scene of Edinburgh, Scotland, Ewan McGregor (Fargo) and an ensemble cast imbue the gritty film with humour and heart.
But if you need something that’s little more than mindless entertainment, then check out 2008 comedy Baby Mama starring hilarious SNL alumni, Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Amy Pohler (Parks and Recreation) or stream 2004’s action film Hellboy, a demon creation of World War II Nazis who grows up to fight for good rather than evil.
