A new month approaches and with it, a great selection of new titles to stream on Hulu. Though the streaming service is creating loads of buzz with the recent debut of the highly anticipated second season of The Handmaiden’s Tale, there is lots more to enjoy in May. Oscar nominated films rub shoulders with horror classics, reality TV favourites join new series premieres. There’s something here for everyone. Read on for some highlights.
Fans of Benedict Cumberbatch (given the unfortunate nickname of Cumberbitches) should note the arrival of 5-part limited series, Patrick Melrose. Based on the acclaimed novels by Edward St. Aubyn, it tells the story of Melrose, a man whose privileged but traumatic childhood leads him to further tumult throughout his twenties and then ultimately towards recovery. Also starring Holliday Grainger (Strike), the series streams from May 12 for those with a Showtime subscription.
I, Tonya recently enjoyed loads of Oscar buzz for two of its lead performances – Australian actress Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) was nominated for her performance as figure skater, Tonya Harding, and Allison Janney (The West Wing) was nominated and ultimately won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Harding’s domineering mother. Based on the true story of elite figure skater Harding, the movie follows the gifted but troubled athlete whose career ended abruptly after she was caught up in a scandal involving figure skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan. Stream I, Tonya on Hulu from May 31.
Want more elite sportspeople from the wrong side of the tracks? And a shot of nostalgia while you’re at it? Then the Rocky films – all five of them – should fit the bill. The original movie, which was written by and starred Sylvester Stallone, went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture in 1976. Stallone was an unknown at the time and the studio, though keen to buy the screenplay, did not want him in the starring role. Stallone believed he was the only person to play boxer, Rocky Balboa, and eventually the studio agreed to take a chance on him. The Rocky franchise went on to be one of the most successful of all time.
For more nostalgia but with a side of scare, Hulu is streaming the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise in May. That’s six chances to watch gruesome serial killer Freddy Krueger terrorise teens in their sleep. Fun fact: a very young Johnny Depp had a small role in the very first film. Spoiler alert: he dies wearing a rad 1980s crop top.
Also noteworthy this month, 2018 Golden Globe Best Motion Film – Foreign Language winner In The Fade streams from May 11. The 13th season of America’s Got Talent premieres May 30, followed by the American Ninja Warrior Season 10 Premiere on May 31. Bear Grylls fans can check out season 4 of Running Wild with Bear Grylls from May 8. And don’t miss the recent Baywatch movie if you want to see attractive people running half-naked on the beach. Starring Zac Efron, The Rock and Priyanka Chopra, there may be a deep story at the heart of this film but who really cares?
