Netflix Australia: What's New in October 2017

Promo for Stranger Things Season 2

It's that time again where we let down our hair and dive into this fantastic bundle of surprises.

Possibly one of the year's most anticipated series, Stranger Things (trailer) S2 slips back on October 27.
We come back to the town on this side of The Upside Down (also known as Hawkins) in 1983, picking up after Will's return to his family. Soon after, they start to unpack Will's visions, stumbling across mysterious flashbacks. Set to release just days before October, it feels like the perfect pairing to have the infamous 'Thriller' soundtrack against the possibility of movement underground.

Riverdale Season 2 (trailer) returns with a bang – or a gunshot wound, really. Fred Andrews has been injured in a hold up a Pop Tate's, leaving the gang reeling. Season two shows weekly on Thursday, direct streamed as it is released in the US, starting October 12.

Another return to Thursdays is Designated Survivor Season 2, Tom Kirkman (Keifer Sutherland) is back in the White House.

In the mood for something heavier and brooding? Acclaimed movie director David Finch spearheads Mindhunter (trailer). Starring Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallant as FBI agents who set the groundwork for investigative techniques and suspect profiling on serial killers. Is it a dive into crazy, or an excellent way to get up close to look them in the eye? Find out October 13.

Arrow (trailer) fans will be happy on October 7 as current season 5 becomes available for bingeing on the first Saturday. All 23 streaming – bringing Oliver back to our screens as he seeks to test out new members to help defend Star City after the departure of Diggle and Thea.

The Meyerowitz stories (new and selected - trailer) is a razor sharp look at two brothers (Stiller and Sandler) who are dealing with the realities of their aging father. Director Noah Baumbach peels away the veneer and examines deeply with this family. At its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, this movie received a standing ovation. I can't wait for October 13. Also starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson.

First person perspective documentary in Kingdom of Us (trailer). Shot in the British West Midlands, the suicide of Paul Shanks leaves behind a family shattered in grief and shock, even six years on. Following a young widow and seven surviving children, they try to piece together distant memories and possible clues to Paul's last decision.

In Kidnap (trailer) Halle Berry leads this white knuckle ride, as single mom Karla Dyson sees her son Frankie snatched and bundled into a car. Karla begins a high stakes pursuit, driving after the unmarked green car without her misplaced phone. This movie trailer has a dejavu feeling of Taken, but connects on a very visceral level, as Halle channels a mother lionness instinct to protect her cub.

A few animated series for younger audiences, Voltron Legendary Defender Sr returns in mid October, Skylanders Academy S2, Word Party S3 and (Adults only) Rick and Morty S3 finale swinging by on October 7, and Equestria Girls: Tales of Canterlot High S1.

If you're a thrillseeker looking for blood, you gotta wait 'til the 20th, when more of your favourites come to play. Host a dress up, or just a 'popcorn and screams' night in with your bestie with Paranormal Activity, Psycho, Cloverfield, and classic Friday the 13th.
