Hulu: What's New in September 2017

Welcome to a new month of streaming! September on Hulu offers up a mix of series and movies that are sure to cater to your every viewing whim. Horror, indie or sci-fi, it’s all covered here. Read on for the highlights.

Set 400 years in the future, The Orville is not the finest exploratory ship in the Earth’s interstellar fleet and its crew have their problems, too. This sci-fi comedy is the brainchild of Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, Ted) who also stars alongside Adrianne Palicki (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Penny Johnson Jerald (Castle). Catch the series premiere on September 11.

Also premiering on September 11, Top of the Lake: China Girl is the series from filmmaker, Jane Campion (The Piano). Set in Campion’s native New Zealand, Top of the Lake is crime drama centred around a 12-year-old pregnant girl who disappears near a freezing lake. Detective Robin Griffin is charged with solving the mystery. Starring Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tail) and David Wenham (Iron Fist).

And the lucky for some Season 13 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy begins streaming this month. Though other actors have come and gone (or famously been fired), the series is still led by original cast member, Ellen Pompeo as Dr. Meredith Grey. The long-running series from Shonda Rhimes continues to draw a faithful following of viewers who just can’t get enough of the professional and personal lives of Meredith and her colleagues. Season 13 premieres September 23.

Quirky indie film Lars and the Real Girl is basically the story of a lonely guy who falls in love with a blow-up doll. It seems improbable, it seems creepy but somehow, critics described the film as entrancing and oddly moving. This is in no small part due to the excellent performances of the cast including Paul Schneider (Parks and Recreation), Emily Mortimer (The Newsroom) and of course, Ryan Gosling as lonely Lars. The original screenplay of this very original film was also nominated for an Oscar. From September 1.

And for the horror that was promised earlier, make a note of Swedish film Let the Right One In. Streaming from September 27, this tells the tale of bullied and alienated Oskar who falls in love with Eli, who is beautiful but not what she seems. Together they set about enacting revenge on those who have hurt them. Cue horror. Critics describe the film as a smart and nuanced take on the vampire genre.

And finally, Al Gore has been on a publicity trail for his documentary sequel about the dangers of global warming. Why not catch the original film, An Inconvenient Truth, before seeing the new one? The first film was released in 2006 and it’s a worthwhile reminder of what issues we were facing then – and a sobering realisation that a decade has passed with what some might argue is very little action towards solving the impending crisis. Catch it from September 1.
