The first month of the second half of 2017 brings a great mix of old and new favourites to the Aussie version of Netflix. From original programming to classic movies, July is sure to provide you with something you want.
In Original TV, there's the new comedy series 'Friends From College', starring a great cast including Key and Peel's Keegan-Michael Key, How I Met Your Mother's Cobie Smulders, and even The Wonder Year's Fred Savage, following the lives of a a group of college friends (well, duh) who are now in the 40's.
But probably the headlining release of the week, at least for gaming fans, is the new animated series 'Castlevania'. Based on the legendary Konami game, this will will tug at all the 80's nostalgia strings as vampire hunter Trevor Belmont goes up against no other than Dracula himself.
Season 2 of 'Shooter' will also be available in July.
With news of the Great Barrier Reef under threat from climate change, the Netflix original documentary 'Chasing Coral' should clear up the picture and give you a more detailed understanding of just what's going on with our reefs. Taking more than 3 years to shoot, with more 650 hours of underwater footage, with some footage coming from volunteers in over 30 countries, the documentary has already received stellar reviews, with The Economist saying the documentary is "A triumph of both visual and narrative storytelling."
The school holidays are happening right now, and Netflix aren't blind to that fact with a couple of Original production just for the little ones (and the no so little anymore ones). The highlights include the new animated series 'Dawn of the Croods' (based on the successful animated feature film), 'The Worst Witch' and season 5 of 'The Adventures of Puss in Boots'.
While it's clear that Netflix has focused on original productions, but it doesn't mean that they've neglected on bringing us non original content, and there are some great titles joining (and sometimes re-joining) the vast Netflix library. For TV, there's the first half of the season 6 of 'Suits', the complete season 6 of the Aussie show 'Offspring', and also the third season of 'Fargo'.
For movies, there are some real classics including 'The Shawshank Redemption' (if you haven't watched it before, please carefully crawl out from under the rock you've been hiding in and get yourself to the nearest Netflix viewing station). Going further back in history is the cult classic 'The Goonies' (again, same procedure as 'The Shawshank Redemption').
Going into more recent history, be sure to check out the comedy 'Hot Tub Time Machine' - the original is very funny and very much better than the sequel. The fairly recent 'Paddington' film adaptation has received excellent reviews, and now is as a good time as any to watch this instant classic, what with the sad news of the passing of Paddington Bear author Michael Bond just last week.
And finally, one of my favourite sci-fi films of recent times and the somewhat underrated 'Cloud Atlas' re-joins the Netflix library. If you can look past the poorly done/slightly-racist white people playing Asians make-up (to be fair, Asians also play white people in the film) and the somewhat disjointed storytelling (don't try to make connections, just enjoy the various storylines as separate stories), then there's a real gem in there.
