As the mercury drops here in Australia, it’s comforting to know that our friends at Hulu have a bunch of new titles to get cosy with this month. From movie classics to docos and everything in between, there’s something to suit just about every taste.
For a refreshing twist on the typical American sitcom family, viewers can stream Black-ish: Complete Season 3 from June 2. Starring Anthony Anderson (Law & Order) and Tracee Ellis Ross (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), this is the story of the Johnson family, an upper-middle-class African-American family whose patriarch finds maintaining a cultural identity difficult in their well-to-do and predominantly white neighbourhood.
Fans of the MTV reality series (and subsequent movies) Jackass will enjoy this Hulu documentary about the rise and fall of the magazine that inspired them. Dumb: The Story of Big Brother Magazine includes interviews with Johnny Knoxfield, best known for co-creating and starring in Jackass, in which he and his co-stars delighted fans with their dangerous and idiotic stunts and low-brow, gross-out humour.
Trekkies should note June 17 on their calendars when Star Trek: Beyond comes to Hulu. Starring Chris Pine (Into The Woods) as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto (Heroes) as famously pointy-eared Commander Spock, the 2016 instalment of the wildly successful sci-fi franchise sees the crew of the USS Enterprise face the perils of a new enemy discovered in deepest, darkest space.
IMDb describes Desperado as follows: “A gunslinger is embroiled in a war with a local drug runner” but the unsuspecting punter might read this and assume this is your basic action film which would be a terrible mistake. In fact, this film by Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Til Dawn) is equal parts thrilling and hilarious and the chemistry between stars Antonio Banderas (The Legend of Zorro) and Salma Hayek (Frida) is SCORCHING.
Catch vintage Brando at the height of his career in On the Waterfront. The film, about an ex-boxer whose work on the docks finds him at odds with corrupt union officials, won a slew of Oscars in 1955 including Best Picture, Best Director for Elia Kazan (A Streetcar Named Desire) and Best Actor for Brando.
Growing in popularity are game shows like Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge where the viewer can enjoy watching contestants push themselves to the limits of human endurance from the comfort of their couch - possibly with snacks. On Spartan, teams consisting of 2 men, 2 women and one elite Spartan athlete (whatever that is) must work together to complete physically punishing obstacle courses. There are the requisite back stories of triumph over adversity and the team that goes all the way to the finals and then wins share in the 250K on offer. Admittedly, this kind of strenuous activity is best experienced from under a blanky on the sofa. Enjoy the Season 2 premiere from June 13.
