Hulu: What's New in May 2017

Poster for Coming to America

Hello May! Didn’t you sneak up on us! The year just keeps on keeping on and of course, so does the streaming content at Hulu. With a selection of series and movie additions, there’s something for everyone. Let’s check it out.

Hulu Original series, Casual, returns for Season 3. Telling the story of bachelor, Alex (Tommy Dewey), and his recently divorced sister, Valerie (Michaela Watkins), and how life circumstances find them living under the same roof again, together they navigate dating life whilst Valerie deals with the tricky business of raising her teenage daughter. Streaming from May 23.

Also returning for another season is Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll. Created by and starring Denis Leary (who enjoyed great fame after releasing deeply un-PC hit song, Asshole, in the early 1990s), ageing rocker, Johnny Rock, still pines for his glory days. When he discovers he has a musically talented daughter, Gigi (Elizabeth Gillies), who wants to reform the old band, it looks like Johnny’s dream might not be dead after all. Season 2 is available from May 30.

BBC Drama, Line of Duty: Season 4 is available to stream from the 1st of the month. Fans of British crime shows will enjoy watching Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) and Detective Constable Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) lead an investigation into the alleged corruption of a well-liked and respected colleague.

Hulu Original documentary, Batman and Bill, is the fascinating untold origin story of the Batman series. Whilst comic fans will surely know that Bob Kane was credited with creating the superhero, this documentary reveals that the dominant creative force behind Batman, Robin, The Joker and many, many others was Bill Finger. Kane never wanted the truth to come out and Finger never angled for proper credit. Their intriguing story streams from May 6.

Before she was a certified and Oscar-winning superstar, Jennifer Lawrence was starring in Winter’s Bone. The film was a breakout for the actress and immediately revealed her to be a prodigious talent, earning her first Oscar nod at just 20 years of age. You can catch the film, a dark and unflinching portrayal of living life dirt poor in the Ozark Mountains, from May 1.

If you’re after levity, then you may want to check out Coming to America. This is classic Eddie Murphy (The Nutty Professor) at the height of his fame. He stars as Prince Akeem, an overly indulged African prince who comes to America in search of a wife.

And if you need an outlet for a nice, therapeutic ugly cry, then look no further than 2016’s You Before Me. Based on the bestseller novel by Jojo Moyes, this tearjerker tells the tale of recently paralysed, Will Traynor, and Lou Clark, the woman who is hired to care for him. You know they fall in love but SPOILER ALERT, not every story has a happy ending. Stars Emilia Clark as Lou – but you might know her better as the Mother of Dragons. Yep, it’s Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen minus her platinum blonde wig.
