Welcome to the new year and on Netflix US, a new collection of titles to jump into this month. Holidays in Australia might mean sun, sand and sipping on cool drinks but our friends across the pond are dealing with much cooler weather so let’s take a look at what’s on offer for those bundled up inside on the couch.

Here in Australia, it’s the school holidays. That means bored kids in dire need of entertainment. For those readers dealing with small people this month, there are some terrific new titles on offer. If you haven’t already, now is the time to introduce them to the indisputable classic, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. Though made over thirty years ago, E.T. must surely remain the world’s most endearing cinematic alien and Drew Barrymore the cutest little sister. Stephen Spielberg’s beloved film is one you’ll want to revisit with the kids.

Also of note, The Parent Trap. Made in 1961, be assured that this is the original starring Hayley Mills – not the remake with Lindsay Lohan when she was still an apple-cheeked sweetie pie. The tale of twin daughters (both played by Mills) who attempt to bring their divorced parents back together, this is wholesome Hollywood at its finest. They just don’t make ‘em like that anymore.

If the kids are after some animated fun, then do check out Bee Movie. Featuring the voices of Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld) and Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones’ Baby), this Dreamworks Animation is the cute story of Barry B. Benson, who after graduating bee college, finds himself uninspired about a future career making honey. Add in a human love interest and you’ve got yourself a sweet, sweet movie indeed!

But enough about the kids. Let’s talk about Frontier, Canadian Discovery Channel’s first foray into scripted drama. Made with Netflix, Frontier is set in the 18th century, a time before the name Canada even existed, a cutthroat time when settlers fought for land and for fur. It’s the brutality of the fur trade that this 6-parter focuses on primarily and early reviews praise Frontier as action-packed and entertaining. Jason Momoa stars. Audiences may recall his appearance in Game of Thrones as the very memorable Khal Drogo. So many memories…

Want more fresh content? Coin Heist is spanking new and features an interesting premise. Based on the novel by Elisa Ludwig, this is the story of four students at a prestigious Philadelphia prep school who join forces to attempt the an impossible crime: stealing from the U.S. mint. Starring Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars) and Alex Saxon (Finding Carter).

Lastly, it would be remiss not to mention that not one but FIVE Superman movies are available to stream from January 1. From the classic original starring the late Christopher Reeve all the way through to the 2006 edition Superman Returns with Brandon Routh (Arrow) in the titular role, there is more Man of Steel than a person could ever hope for. Enjoy!
