Happy New Year, one and all. For many, it is a time for setting resolutions for the brand new year ahead, a time to reflect on what has been achieved before, and to consider how we can best improve going forward. For others - those enlightened beings who know that New Year’s resolutions only end in disappointment – a new year is a time to celebrate new beginnings, specifically of the new season of their favourite TV series. And boy does Hulu deliver this January. Let’s take a look.

If you’re keen for something new, then take a look at British slacker comedy, Wasted. Following 20-somethings Kent (Dylan Edwards), Alison (Gwyneth Keyworth), Morpheus (Danny Kirrane) and Sarah (Rose Reynolds), their aimless, small village existence takes a surreal turn when actor Sean Bean appears to Morpheus as a “spirit guide.” Adorned in the Winterfell garb of his famous Game of Thrones character, Ned Stark, Bean doles out some harsh realities to his bored stoner charge.

For more fresh content, consider The Mick. When her wealthy sister is arrested for fraud, rough nut Mackenzie “Mickey” Murphy finds herself transported to moneyed Greenwich, Connecticut, where she becomes the sole carer for her niece and nephews. Naturally her hard drinking, ciggie smoking lifestyle is at odds with the task of caring for three spoiled kids; cue comedic moments! The premise is not a new one but fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will enjoy seeing Kaitlin Olson at the helm of this comedy created by Dave and John Chernin, writers on Always Sunny.

For those already invested in a series, keep an eye out for new season returns this month. Of particular note are the following season premieres for the much beloved crime drama Bones: Season 12, Nashville: Season 5, Homeland: Season 6 and Shonda Rhimes’ political drama Scandal: Season 6.

If you’re wondering if documentary Roseanne For President is about ‘that’ Roseanne, then yes, it is. American comedian Roseanne Barr is best known for her eponymous sitcom which was hugely popular in the 1990s. She brought the struggles of working class families to televisions around the world and the world fell in love with her brash and brassy brand of truth-telling. Here, Barr makes a legitimate run for the Oval Office when she attempts to win the nomination as the Green Party’s presidential candidate for 2012. She is pro-marijuana and anti-Wall Street but also, probably critically, anti-real life connections – rather than travelling across the country to make campaign appearances, she preferred to stay home and appear via Skype. It should be a spoiler to no-one to say that Barr did not become President of the United States but it is no less entertaining to watch her try. Look out for appearances by Michael Moore (Farenheit 9/11) and Rosie O’Donnell (The Fosters).

Those looking for a movie to enjoy this month could try a classic like Annie Hall. Written by Woody Allen and starring himself as the neurotic love interest for ditzy Annie Hall (played by the wonderful Diane Keaton), this film won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1977. This marked the beginning of Allen’s career as a serious filmmaker and also launched Keaton’s acting career.

But if you prefer your movies more recent and maybe even vaguely offensive, then don’t forget to check out Dirty Grandpa. Starring Zac Efron (Bad Neighbours) and Robert De Niro (Meet The Fockers), I’ll let you guess which one plays the dirty grandpa.
