Stan: What's New in October 2016

Poster for Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2

Can't believe it's already October, feels like it was only yesterday that we were all making, and breaking our New Year's Resolutions. But here we are, and so let's take a look at what's being added to Stan's ever growing content library this month.

It's a months of second seasons apparently, as several of Stan's exclusive shows launch their season 2 debuts this month. There's the second season of the Aussie comedy hit No Activity, coming October 26. Joined by new cast members Rose Byrne and Damon Herriman, look out for more action and inaction in this cop show with a difference.

Ash vs Evil Dead is also starting its second season, with new episodes airing every Monday starting October 3. Star and legend Bruce Campbell is actually coming down to Australia to launch the new season!

And Patrick Stewart and Jackie Weaver are back in season 2 of Blunt Talk, also airing new season 2 episodes every Monday, starting on the 3rd.

Those still not sated by their thirst for more season 2 fun can also look out for the entire second season of The Flash, arriving October 7.

As for other TV highlights, there's the 9th season of Doctor Who, the second season (quelle surprise) of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor. There is also the third and final season of Hannibal.

As usual, there's a good mix of movies, some new, some just new to Stan, that's coming in October. I'm not going to go through all of them, but those looking for drama and romance (not necessarily all within the same film) will be well served. Keanu Reeves star in 'John Wick' as an ex-hitman settling some old scores (are there any ex-hitman that don't have scores to settle?). It's that's not your thing, maybe try Tom Hardy's 'Locke', a heart-pounding drama that is both well directed and acted. More acting masterclass is present in 2014's 'The Judge', starring Robert Downey Jr. (when he was taking a break from the Marvel Universe) and the always fantastic Robert Duvall.

Also co-starring Duvall, is the 2002 thriller 'John Q' in which Denzel Washington's character takes extreme actions to get some free healthcare in the States - it's more interesting than how I just made it sound, trust me.

For those seeking a bit of romance in October, and if you haven't yet caught the disease where you roll your eyes whenever you hear another one of Nicholas Sparks' books is being turned into a film, then 'The Best of Me' is surely worth a watch. Just don't blame me if you start rolling your eyes halfway through the film. If you're after something more original, the intriguing premise of 'Upside Down' is well worth checking out - it may not be the best executed film ever, but at least it's something different.

Also don't forget to watch 'The Trip to Italy', the "not as good but still quite good" follow up to Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon's 'The Trip'.

As usual, there are a myriad of foreign films being added to Stan's library this (and every) month, but the pick of the bunch is Gaspar Noé's 'Irreversible', perhaps one of the most controversial films of all time (well it was, then Noé's 'Love' came along).

Streaming platforms have always been great places to catch new docos, and on Stan this month, there's the Lego documentary 'Beyond The Brick: A Lego Brickumentary'. Even more interesting is 'Cartel Land', looking at, literally, both sides of the drug war being battled on the US border.
