Amazon Prime Video: What's New in August 2016

Another month, another streaming service and another plethora of content to watch until you drop. So many titles, so little time! So what has Prime got in store for the month of August?

Let’s start with movies. Fans of the Coen brothers should check out Inside Llewyn Davis. Written and directed by the guys responsible for cult classics like The Big Lebowski, Fargo and No Country for Old Men (also streaming this month), this film tells the story of Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac), a young singer making his way in artist’s haven Greenwich Village, the heart of New York’s folk scene in the early 1960s. Also starring the radiant, Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby) and musical superstar, Justin Timberlake (Friends with Benefits).

For some retro fun of the mind-bending variety, you can’t go past The Matrix Trilogy. That’s right, all three films, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions are available for streaming from August 1. Starring Keanu Reeves (Speed) as Neo, Laurence Fishburne (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) as Morpheus and Carrie-Anne Moss (Memento) as Trinity, I’d explain the movie to you but frankly, I still don’t get it. IMDb says, “A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers.” Intriguing! But still makes no sense to me.

Into martial arts? You might like Ong Bak – The Thai Warrior. Starring Tony Jaa (Fast & Furious 7), a young martial artist goes to the city to take on the underworld after the head of a sacred statue is stolen from his village. Jaa is renowned for his incredible Muay Thai skills and stunts which he performs without the assistance of wires or CG effects.

Amazon Original Elvis & Nixon is the true story of the improbable meeting between the King of Rock n Roll, Elvis Presley and American President at the time, Richard Nixon. Starring Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) as Nixon and Michael Shannon (Boardwalk) as Elvis.

And for a series to sink your teeth into, there’s House of Lies. Described as a dark comedy, this is story of Marty Kaan (Don Cheadle), a management consultant whose success is owing in no small part to his lack of scruples. Also stars Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) and Aussie Josh Lawson (The Campaign).

And for a feel-good dose of Hollywood nostalgia, why not revisit rom com You’ve Got Mail. Starring Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) and Meg Ryan (When Harry Met Sally) at the height of their careers (a time that coincided with email being NEW and AMAZING), this is no Sleepless in Seattle but as I recall, the soundtrack is pretty good. The premise is that two business rivals who outwardly loathe one another interact anonymously over the interwebz and oh, you wouldn’t read about it, fall in love. Don’t try and analyse it, just let yourself sink into the froth.

If froth-free nostalgia is more your style, A Clockwork Orange is the cult flick for you. Based on the dystopian novel by Anthony Burgess, Stanley Kubrick’s (The Shining) adaptation is confronting. Widely considered a cinematic masterpiece, British actor Malcolm McDowell (Mozart in the Jungle) stars.
