Netflix USA: What's New in June 2016

A new month is upon us and with it, a host of new titles to enjoy on Netflix. Popular series deliver new seasons and there are movies to enjoy, both new and classic. To watch US Netflix here in Australia, you'll need a geo-unblocking service, which also allows you to access Netflix Canada, UK, and dozens of other Netflix regions, switching between each region instantly. There are many geo-unblocking services, but Unblock-Us is highly recommended due to its reliability, performance and ease of use (a simple change to your DNS settings is all that's needed - ensuring this works on devices that don't support VPNs). The same subscription also allows you to sign up to and watch Hulu (additional subscription fees may be needed for Hulu Plus), and dozens of other streaming services from around the world.

Orange is the New Black continues to endear audiences with its mix of reality and heart as Season 4 commences mid-month. The show’s ability to cover weighty themes like drug addiction and transgender whilst threading a comic theme throughout demonstrates the clever writing going on. The characters, inmates in a women’s minimum security prison, are damaged people with a host of sometimes shocking flaws but their humanity is so beautifully celebrated that the viewer cannot help but care about them. Taylor Schilling (Argo) heads up an amazing cast.

Also making its highly anticipated return is hit TV drama, Scandal. Kerry Washington (Django Unchained) plays Olivia Pope whose connection to American politics - and the president in particular – is complicated. A skilled operator within her own crisis management firm, Olivia’s own life proves harder to manage. Season 5 is available from June 11.

Janis: Little Girl Blue is the 2015 documentary tracking Janis Joplin’s rise to stardom during the 1960s. Most noted for her unusual voice on songs like “Me and Bobby McGee”, Joplin was a troubled artist whose life was ultimately cut short following a heroin overdose. She was just 27 years old. Musician Cat Power narrates.

If you’re not caught up on movie nominees from the Oscars earlier this year, what better place to start than with Spotlight which took out Best Motion Picture for 2016. Starring (and earning Oscar nominations for) Mark Ruffalo (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Rachel McAdams (The Notebook), Spotlight tells the true story of how the Boston Globe newspaper uncovered the scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, sending shockwaves all the way to Rome. Compelling viewing. See it from June 22.

Dinosaur fans will be delighted to know that the original first three films Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III all join the Netflix stable this month. But if you’re after something much fresher and that gets you right in the feels, don’t miss The Fundamentals of Caring starring Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place).

As is customary, there are titles set to leave Netflix this month. The Bank Job is a Jason Statham (Fast & Furious 7) staple – the British actor specialises in tough guy, shoot ‘em ups so if that’s what you’re looking for, check this one out before June 15 or alas, it will be gone.
