A new month is upon us and so it goes that Hulu has added a bunch more titles for couch-loving peeps to enjoy. Let’s check out some of June’s TV and movie highlights.
If you're after the latest US TV shows, and also now plenty of hit movies like World War Z and The Wolf Of Wall Street (and even movies not starting with 'W'), then a Hulu subscription is what you need (now with ad-free option). To sign up, you'll need a geo-unblocker service (or simply follow our guide), and the same geo-unblocker service can also get you access to Netflix Canada, UK, and dozens of other Netflix regions, plus other location limited streaming services.
On premise alone, a drama based on the lives of police officers working for the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) seems unremarkable. We’ve definitely seen this before. And though Southland reportedly never enjoyed huge audiences, reviews suggest the series deserved them. Starring Ben McKenzie (The O.C.) and Regina King (The Big Bang Theory), Southland garnered praise for its excellent production and realistic portrayal of the emotional toll of being a cop in a big city. You can check out all 5 seasons from June 1.
The blurring of reality TV, sitcom and mockumentary provides often hilarious results in Barely Famous. Erin and Sara Foster, the daughter of famous music producer, David Foster, play themselves as they document their lives in Hollywood. The siblings’ willingness to send themselves up as the cameras follow Sara’s struggling acting career and Erin’s dismal love life has garnered the series some excellent reviews. Season 2 is available from June 3.
Documentary fans will be interested to know that He Named Me Malala is joining the Hulu stable from June 11. In 2012, the world learned of the remarkable young girl, Malala Yousafzai who was shot in the face by the Taliban for being a vocal advocate for girls’ education in Pakistan. She was just 15 years old. This documentary looks at the events leading up to the attack and then the aftermath in which Malala continued to work as an activist for the rights of girls, addressed the United Nations and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize twice (she was a co-winner in 2014). And all this before her 18th birthday. A must-see.
For more long-form viewing, there are a bunch of movie classics to choose from this month. For instance, the Francis Ford Coppola masterpiece, Apocolypse Now. Set during the height of the Vietnam War, the shoot was reportedly so long and so gruelling that actor Martin Sheen (The West Wing) suffered a heart attack.
If that sounds too heavy, take a load off with cult fave, Wayne’s World. The brainchild of Mike Myers (Austin Powers), who can forget the adorable Wayne and Garth’s quest for an excellent party time? There are too many amazing moments to list here so exsqueeze me, just go and watch it, okay?
Other movie picks this month include Mullholland Drive, director David Lynch’s kooky and unsettling film that made Naomi Watts (Birdman) a star; the truly excellent Heartburn, an autobiographical account of the collapse of author Nora Ephron’s marriage with Meryl Streep (Into The Woods) and Jack Nicholson (As Good As It Gets) being exceptional in their respective roles; and for a hit of 1970s horror, you can’t go past Carrie, Sissy Spacek’s turn as the blood-soaked prom queen in the adaptation the Stephen King novel.
And finally, don’t miss O.J.: Made in America from the producers of ESPN's award-winning 30 for 30. This documentary follows the rise and fall of American football star, O.J. Simpson, from his days growing up in Los Angeles to his murder trial that polarized the country.
