Stan: What's New in June 2016

The year is whizzing by. Winter is here. Binge-watching is officially in full-swing. So let’s take a peek at what’s new to Stan’s streaming stable.

Most notable in this month’s exclusive premieres is new series, Roadies, created by Cameron Crowe. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, it should. Think Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire and the list goes on. Keeping with Crowe’s particular love of music as a central theme to his movies (he is also responsible for cult 90s classic, Singles) Roadies tells the backstage stories of a road crew following an arena rock band on a major multi-city tour. The cast is headed up by Luke Wilson (Legally Blonde) who is underrated but reliably great in most things. From June 27, new episodes will be fast tracked each Monday.

UnREAL Season 2 arrives from June 7 with new episodes fast-tracked every Tuesday. The series revolves around a fictional reality TV dating show, going behind the scenes to reveal just how producer Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby) captures (and subtly coerces) the tear-streaked, drama-fuelled magic. Fans of The Bachelor will no doubt relish the opportunity to peek behind the façade of reality TV and see all the moving parts. The series has been well-received critically thus far. Worth a look.

For a hit of testosterone, you can’t go past Season 3 of The Last Ship. Executive produced by Michael “blow sh!t up” Bay (Transformers, Pearl Harbour), this series centres around a global catastrophe and the crew of a lone naval destroyer charged with saving humanity from extinction. Adventure and action are guaranteed this season as the crew head into Asia. Travis Van Winkle (Hart of Dixie) stars.

Want more testosterone? You need to check out Southpaw. This is the story of Billy Hope, a boxer whose charmed life (successful career, beautiful wife, sweet kid) falls apart when tragedy strikes. It takes trainer, Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), to help him get his life back. Granted, it doesn’t sound like a flick to watch with your chick, but a ridiculously ripped Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy should help sweeten the deal. Also starring Rachel McAdams (The Notebook), Southpaw is available to stream from June 23.

And for a dose of world cinema quirk, there’s Lovemilla. The path of true love never did run true and so it is for Milla and Aimo. Firstly, they live with Milla’s parents who are alcoholics-turned-zombies. Secondly, just when they think they have enough money to escape, Aimo blows the cash super-sizing his muscles and then turning himself into a robot. It’s complicated. From Finnish director, Teemu Nikki, this is a comedy trip you won’t soon forget.

For more binge-worthy TV, check out The Affair. When a struggling novelist, Noah (Dominic West) meets a young waitress, Alison (Ruth Wilson) in Montauk, they begin a passionate affair. Problematically, Noah is married with 4 children and Alison is attempting to resurrect her own marriage after a devastating tragedy. The series explores the consequences of the affair from the perspective of both Noah and Alison. Having won 3 Golden Globes thus far, this is quality television at its best.
