Here’s one thing I know for sure: as the average temperature drops, couches across the land become firmly imprinted with butts – and to be specific, butts watching Netflix. This is certainly the case in my household and I can only imagine this happens in the US of A, too. But alas, the temperature is on its way UP in the land of the free. Perhaps that’s why this month’s offerings feel a little light on.
But don’t panic, my Aussie friends in Uggs! You know that there is always something decent to Netflix and chill to – except I only recently found out that “chill” doesn’t mean what I thought it meant. If you think it means binge watching teev and relaxing then you’re doing it wrong.
But I digress. Let’s talk about May on Netflix USA! Chelsea Handler, whose documentary “Chelsea Does” recently premiered on Netflix, has a new talk show. Going back to the format that launched her career, the comedienne noted the new show will be more serious than her previous talk show (Chelsea Lately), describing it as having “The well-roundedness of 60 Minutes but faster, quicker, cooler.” The new show kicks off May 11.
Super-sleuth fans who love themselves some Sherlock should tune in to A Study in Sherlock. Delving into the world of the show, expect an in-depth look behind the scenes and interviews with Benedict Cumberbatch and other cast members.
Maybe you’re looking to throw on your favourite trackie dacks and gorge your face on hot popcorn (with butter – #obvi) in which case might I suggest either Bring It On or Sixteen Candles as the perfect accompaniment? These teen faves just give and give – we all know Sixteen Candles is an absolute classic that has been delighting audiences for more than 31 years but it might shock and dismay you to know that Bring It On has been bringing it for 16 years now. I know.
Speaking of longevity, fans of the first season of Grace and Frankie will be pleased to know that the incredible Jane Fonda (Monster-in-Law) and Lily Tomlin (I Heart Huckabees) are back for Season 2 starting May 6. Martin Sheen (The West Wing) and Sam Waterston (Law & Order) round out a fabulous cast. Though aimed squarely at the Baby Boomer market, Grace and Frankie’s clever and heartfelt storyline holds appeal for a much wider demographic.
And for something a little different, check out documentary, Jesus Town USA. From directors Billie Mintz and Julian T. Pinder, welcome to a small town in Oklahoma who, for 88 years, has held an annual pantomime of the life of Jesus. Once attracting audiences in the hundred thousands, the pantomime struggles to stay relevant in modern times. From IMDb: “With endearing characters, quirky humour, and stunning cinematography, "Jesus Town USA" documents a town grappling with questions of tradition, legacy, and what it means to be a community.”
And as is always the way with Netflix USA, a new month brings a cull to its heaving list of titles. Perhaps there won’t be too many tears shed for the departure of Bratz: BFF: Best Friends Forever but don’t miss Kevin Smith’s uber-awesome and ultra-classic, Clerks. You have until May 31.
Also consider Is The Man Who is Tall Happy? Yes, the title is wacky but it’s a series of interviews featuring linguist, philosopher and activist Noam Chomsky done in hand-drawn animation. Checking out May 13.
