Netflix USA: What's New in April 2016

Netflix USA has plenty to offer us here on the other side of the world as the temperature drops and the likelihood of serious couch-surfing rises. Along with new seasons of series favourites, a host of movie classics join the streamer this month.

Series lovers will welcome the return of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt for Season 2. Garnering a devoted following in its first season, the innovative comedy (created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock) follows titular character, Kimmy (Ellie Kemper), who must readjust to life in New York City after spending 15 years living in an underground bunker at the behest of a cult leader. Season 2 promises more quirky comedy that saw the series nominated for multiple Emmys.

Also returning for its second season is How to Get Away with Murder. A star vehicle for Viola Davis (The Help), the Oscar-nominated actress plays Annalise Keating, a brilliant but mysterious criminal defence professor who, along with a group of her students, becomes embroiled in a murder plot that turns their lives upside down. If you’re a fan of executive producer Shonda Rhimes’ previous work (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal), then this is sure to appeal.

Other series additions include Cutthroat Kitchen Seasons 3-4 for those who like high stakes with their food prep, and Season 6 of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, where viewers follow their host into countries where Bourdain delves into political issues as well as indigenous food and culture.

For those with tweens in the house, check out Lost & Found Music Studios. The series follows young aspiring musicians attending an after-school music program designed to help them realise their true potential as artists. Got younger kids and a taste for nostalgia? Don’t miss the remake of children’s animated classic, Danger Mouse. It streams from April 29.

Movie buffs get ready to revisit some classics. On offer, A Clockwork Orange (based on the cult novel of the same name), Boogie Nights (Mark Wahlberg), Mystic River (Sean Penn) and The Shawshank Redemption (Morgan Freeman). If those titles feel a little serious, then you might prefer Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts), The Princess Bride (Robin Wright), Something’s Gotta Give (Jack Nicholson) or Best in Show, the best and funniest movie ever made about a national dog show competition.

Movies for little people include last year’s popular Minions (Sandra Bullock), the 2011 family drama, Dolphin Tale (Harry Connick Jr.) and My Girl, featuring Macaulay Culkin when he was still an adorable little imp.

A comedy special, Patton Oswalt: Talking for Clapping, should appeal to those familiar with Oswalt’s brand of humour. It’s possible you know him more for his voiceover work (The Goldbergs, Bojack Horseman, American Dad) but Oswalt has added consistently to his resume with work including Young Adult with Charlize Theron and playing series regulars on Two and a Half Men and Veep.

And finally, it’s time to say goodbye to a host of titles this month including, sadly, Vanilla Ice Goes Amish (Season 1). Also leaving, Mr Bean’s Holiday and Let the Right One In – depending on whether you like to laugh your pants off or have them scared off you, those two might genuinely be worth catching before they’re gone. Vanilla Ice? Not so much.
