Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are set to return in a special episode Sherlock later this year. The announcement of the Sherlock special at Comic-Con already has fans speculating about the Victorian era setting of this one-off episode, but Australians fans won't have to wait too long to see the new episode. Local streaming outfit Stan has locked up an exclusive deal with BBC Worldwide to bring the special express to Stan subscribers, to be made available within moments after the original UK airing.

Nick Forward, Stan’s Director of Content and Product, was delighted at Stan being the first-airing location for this one-off episode, the first new episode of Sherlock in two years.

“Sherlock is arguably the most popular drama series in the world right now and the premiere of the new episode will be a global TV event that we’re thrilled to be part of. This extension of our partnership with BBC Worldwide continues our commitment to bring the biggest new shows exclusively to Stan, available day and date with the rest of the world,” said Forward.

Sue Vertue, producer for Sherlock, was also delighted that Australian fans will be able to get access to the new episode without having to wait. “It’s fantastic to have Stan on board as our partner for the Sherlock special in Australia and for the fans there to be able to watch day and date with the UK,” sid Vertue.

Stan is also sponsoring a limited run at selected cinemas in Australia of the new episode, following the episode's premier on the streaming service.

Stan subscribers can already stream the entire series of Sherlock, and many fans are expected to binge watch all three seasons prior to the airing of the new episode (the airing date has yet to be confirmed).
