A new month means new content for Netflix subscribers and June 2015 has a few tasty morsels on offer.
The Wachowskis (The Matrix series, V for Vendetta) latest work Sense8 debuted on June 5. The sibling duo teamed up with comic writer J. Michael Straczynski (Changeling, Babylon 5) for the Netflix original series. Sense8 appears to be about eight individuals in eight separate cities around the world who become telepathically intertwined. The group are able to share knowledge, emotion and experience to assist each other to evade and ultimately defeat the villain in pursuit of them. Don’t expect a resolution at the end of season one though, the creators have apparently planned for a five season run (and that’s their initial plan.) Once you get your head around the premise the series shows some promise, with the classic Netflix casting mix of ambitious newcomers and solid TV experience.
Without a doubt the most exciting addition in June is season 3 of Orange is the New Black, arriving this Friday June 12. OITNB has been a roaring success with a colourful and layered cast of characters. The exploration of what brought these ladies together in Litchfield has been a true pleasure to watch, but can the third season keep up the standard? It was always tough swallowing the premise of an attractive, white blonde American woman being sent to gaol, but if her original 16-month sentence stretches into fourth and fifth seasons, it could be too much to bear. Still though, have high hopes, the first two seasons were top viewing.
Batman fans are also set for a lot more love with three more Batman films coming this month. Tim Burton’s Batman Returns and Joel Schumacher’s double header of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. Batlovers already have The Dark Knight Rises available to enjoy, along with the animated movie Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (directed by Eric Radomski, co-creator of the excellent Batman: The Animated Series.) These 1990’s renditions of the classic dark hero however are a whole different world. In particular the wonderfully colourful and delightfully camp Batman and Robin (featuring names like Clooney, Schwarzanegger and Thurman) is a must watch and rewatch for all Batman aficionados.
Some of the other new movie additions include Gran Torino (Clint Eastwood badass in front of and behind the camera,) I Am Legend (from when we couldn’t go a single summer without another Will Smith movie,) No Country for Old Men (The Coen Bros, Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson,) The Imposter (acclaimed trickster documentary,) Something’s Gotta Give (Jack Nicholson and Dianne Keaton, try to ignore Keanu Reeves,) and Looney Tunes Back in Action (the second animated/live action from Warner Bros. after Space Jam, featuring Brendan Fraser.) Popular TV series’ Suits and Downton Abbey are also set to arrive by month’s end, but whether it will be complete runs remains to be seen. See the list with dates below. Happy Netflixing.
