The Q2 2025 stats are out for the Australian streaming scene, and we might be seeing the start of the decline of one major streaming platform.
Thanks to data provided by streaming search engine JustWatch, we can finally see just how well each streaming service is doing in Australia for the second quarter of 2025.
The biggest news for the quarter was the launch of Max, which used to be known as HBO Max, which then became known as HBO Max again. The biggest loser in the launch was Binge, which almost overnight lost all of its HBO content, previously the main draw for the platform.
So it wasn't surprising to see a 2% drop in Binge's market share, which could translate to something more significant in the next quarter. Other platforms also saw a drop, including a 1% drop for Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Another big move during the final days of the quarter was the exiting of the sports streaming market by Optus Sports, which holds exclusive rights on several sporting competitions, most notably the English Premier League. A deal made between Optus and Stan saw Optus Sports customers being transitioned to Stan Sports, the new home of Premier League football, at a discounted rate which also includes the full Stan subscription tier. So the 2% rise in market share for Stan might also translate to something bigger in the next quarter.
Disney+, Paramount+ both saw 1% increases, while "Other" stayed flat. At the current time, JustWatch does not appear to be allow HBO Max to be searchable on its streaming content search service.
In terms of changes in market share through the first 6 months of 2025, this is reflected in the second set of graphs shown below, with monthly changes shown in a slightly magnified fashion to show micro changes.
We see clear downward trends for Netflix and Binge, and upwards trends for Disney+, Stan and Paramount+.
