It's a brand new week and a brand new month on Stan, and let's have a look at what's been happening on the subscription streaming platform in the last week (you can also check out our full preview of what's being added in September here).
Pretty much the status quo in TV land, but there is a new season of the subversively funny House of Lies, so make sure you add that to your ever growing watch list.
Picking out the movie highlights for the week produced a rather weird mix of classics, indie hits and solid Aussie drama. I've mentioned Sicario before in this feature back in 2016, but it's back in the Stan catalogue again (I didn't really know it was gone, to be honest). So watch it (again?) before it disappears again.
Be Kind Rewind was all the rage back when it was first released and "Swedes" actually became a real thing for a while. The movie itself was pretty good but definitely not perfect. Imagine if someone decided to make a Swede of this film. Mind. Blown.
With race relations in the U.S. at an all time low it seems, this classic it a timely watch if any. Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier (is he ever in a bad film?) are excellent as the two protagonists in The Defiant Ones, showing that the concept of race is an artificial construct that really has no place any more in the 21st century (or in the mid 20th century, when this film was made).
Hong Kong second wave film master Wong Kar-wai's classic Days of Being Wild is one of his earlier hits, featuring a who's who of HK cinema in this poetic masterpiece.
And finally back home, Pawno looks at the trials and tribulations of the residents of Footscray, from the perspective of a pawn shop owner. Very interesting look at a part of Australia you often don't see in film or TV (ie. the real Australia).
