Netflix USA: What's New in March 2017

So it’s March already and if you’re anything like me, you’re wondering where the beginning of 2017 went and lamenting your failure (once again) to achieve any of your New Year’s resolutions. If so, I recommend taking to your couch to work through all your feels and enjoy the streaming selections our Netflix US friends have on offer for this month. Let’s take a look at some highlights.

Summer may be over here in Australia but let the laughter live on with Amy Schumer: The Leather Special. Netflix pride themselves on a vast selection of comedy specials and there is no bigger name in comedy right now than Schumer. She followed up her breakout hit TV show Inside Amy Schumer with a stunningly successful and critically acclaimed debut on the big screen with her film, Trainwreck. In The Leather Special, Schumer performs her signature brand of unapologetically honest comedy, the controversial nature of which is less to do with WHAT is being said and more that a WOMAN is saying it. She continues to blaze a trail for women everywhere and this special is sure to be another hilarious part of the ride.

Love, the romantic comedy co-created and written by Judd Apatow (Superbad), returns for Season 2. Mickey (Gillian Jacobs) and Gus (Paul Rust) spent Season 1 falling into one dating disaster after another but when we meet up with them again this season, they are attempting a relationship with one another. The road is unlikely to be smooth but if last season is anything to go by, will be awkward, human and giggle-inducing all at once.

And speaking of season returns, How To Get Away With Murder is back for its third. The brainchild of wildly successful writer and producer, Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal), Murder centres around brilliant criminal defense professor, Annalise Keating and an ambitious group of law students. The role of Keating is played by Viola Davis who just won the Oscar for her supporting role in the film, Fences, with Denzel Washington. Expect more riveting drama delivered by an outstanding cast this season.

Looking for a film to enjoy? Consider Mel Brooks’ classic comedy, Blazing Saddles (1974), made famous by its baked beans by the campfire scene. Or wrap your brain around the mind-bending thriller, Memento (2000), starring Aussie actor Guy Pearce (Jack Irish).

The Most Hated Woman in America tells the true story of Madalyn Murray O'Hair, an American atheist activist. Best known for her part in the landmark Supreme Court ruling which ended official Bible-reading in American Schools in 1963, O’Hair, founder of group American Atheists, attracted much media attention and scathing criticism for those who saw her work as an attack on Christianity. The film stars Melissa Leo (The Fighter) as O’Hair with Juno Temple (Vinyl), Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) and Peter Fonda (Easy Riders) in supporting roles. And just a heads up, O’Hair’s story does not have a happy ending.

Those looking for entertainment for the kids should most definitely check out Disney’s The BFG, the film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book. Starring Mark Rylance (Wolf Hall) as BFG (Big Friendly Giant), children are sure to adore the magic of Steven Spielberg’s (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial) direction and the sense of silliness invoked by Dahl’s imaginary world.
