The festive season is upon us and with it, a whole host of new content to Hulu to make the season merry and bright – or scary and dark, depending on which genre you’re geared up for. So what’s in store for December?

For a serve of something brand spanking new for 2016, check out Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. The film is an adaptation of journalist Kim Barker’s memoir The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which recounts her time as a reporter in Pakistan and Afghanistan beginning in 2002. Tina Fey (30 Rock) stars as Barker in what critics hailed as her best performance. Of course, Fey is best known for her comedic work which began on the iconic Saturday Night Live, but this role sees her delve deeper into character than perhaps ever before. Also stars Aussie actress Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey).

If you’re looking for a new series, Barbarians Rising may tick that box. This docudrama made by History Channel is only 4 episodes long but is compelling viewing for anyone interested in the rise and fall of the Roman empire. Alongside the tales of iconic and illustrious warriors such as Spartacus and Attila are those of less well-known men and women of this fascinating if brutal period in history. Streams from December 27.

Perhaps all this over-hyped merriment is making you crave nostalgia and gore and if that’s the case, then won’t you be delighted to know that there are not one but EIGHT Friday the 13th films to enjoy this December! Beginning with the 1980 original (and arguably the best) Friday the 13th and culminating in the 1989 installment Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, hell in a hockey mask is yours to gorge on. Fun fact: Kevin Bacon appeared in the original film. Other fun fact: the fourth film in the series was called The Final Chapter but was then followed by another 8 films. That makes 12 films in total. That means you’re missing the last 4 here but if you’re on the nice list, who knows what Santa might bring you next month?

Maybe you want to revisit movies of yester-year that deliver on that feel-good hit. If that’s the case, then you simply mustn’t go past Rain Man. Starring Tom Cruise (Jerry Maguire) as wheeling and dealing Charlie Babbit and Dustin Hoffman (Meet the Fockers) as the autistic savant older brother he never knew he had, this is a road trip film like no other. In addition to winning many the awards (including the Oscar for Best Picture), the Barry Levinson (Good Morning, Vietnam) classic was the highest grossing film in 1988. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll remember a time when people still liked Tom Cruise.

And finally, for a movie experience that is quite unlike anything you’ve seen before, consider Anomalisa. This film from the creative mind of Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) is the story of Michael Stone, a man leading a life so mundane that despite having a successful career and a wife and child, he feels alienated and numb. A chance encounter with Lisa changes his perspective. Anyone familiar with Kaufman’s work will know that it has a tendency towards oddness. That this film which critics raved exposes human nature with confronting realism is in fact a stop-motion animation made with puppets gives you a sense of what to expect. Or not. Because with Kaufman, you never can tell.
