Amazon Prime Video: What's New in September 2016

A scene from Crisis In Six Scenes

Here in Australia, the first blossoms of spring are upon the boughs. And in this season of new growth, what better time to welcome in a fresh batch of new streaming content to Amazon Prime. Here are some highlights.

So we should probably talk about the Amazon Originals first and specifically, Woody Allen’s very first foray into television, Crisis in Six Scenes. Set in 1960s America, a time of great change and political unrest, a middle class suburban family’s life is thrown into disarray by a houseguest. The comedy series, available from September 30, is in 6 parts and is expected to be a one off. Allen (Blue Jasmine) stars alongside Miley Cyrus (A Very Murray Christmas) as a young hippie with communist leanings.

Comedienne Tig Notaro is co-writer and star of the semi-autobiographical, One Mississippi. This darkly funny series follows Tig back to her hometown to farewell her dying mother. To further complicate matters, Tig is facing her own health crisis enduring chemotherapy treatment after a double mastectomy. Add typical family dysfunction and a clingy girlfriend and you have a recipe for laughs with heart. From September 9.

If darkly funny is still too dark for you, then let’s head back to a lighter time with films that were designed to be anything but serious. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me is the second film in Mike Myers’ spy spoof franchise and some argue, the best. In this sequel, Dr. Evil has stolen Austin’s mojo, baby! And if Austin can’t shag, the world as we know it will surely end! Myers’ shows off his considerable talents as Powers, Dr. Evil and Fat Bastard. Enjoy a dose of low-brow parody at its best.

And speaking of lowbrow, it might be time to revisit – or discover for the first time – Caddyshack. Back when Bill Murray was almost baby-faced and Chevy Chase was one of the funniest guys in Hollywood, Caddyshack educated audiences about life at an exclusive golf club. The members are wealthy, the staff are poor and the dancing gopher is stuffed. You’re welcome.

For something that hit the box office a little more recently, check out Sicario. Emily Blunt is Kate Macer, an FBI agent whose idealistic views are set to be crushed when she joins a new government task force. Thrown into the heart of the drug war as it plays out at the border between the U.S. and Mexico, Kate’s journey is eye-opening in the worst possible way. Sicario is an intense ride into the seedy underbelly of the drug trade.
