Netflix USA: What's New in January 2016

Once again we look forward to another month of new content on the US version of Netflix. To watch US Netflix here in Australia, you'll need a geo-unblocking service, which also allows you to access Netflix Canada, UK, and dozens of other Netflix regions, switching between each region instantly. There are many geo-unblocking services, but Unblock-Us is highly recommended due to its reliability, performance and ease of use (a simple change to your DNS settings is all that's needed - ensuring this works on devices that don't support VPNs). The same subscription also allows you to sign up to and watch Hulu (additional subscription fees may be needed for Hulu Plus), and dozens of other streaming services from around the world.

The festive season may be drawing to a close, but with many people still enjoying summer holidays here in Australia, it feels like the world has not yet returned to normal operating speed.

And so it goes for the world of video streaming, where the selection of new titles on offer appears a little light on. But fear not, there are still titles that are worthy of binge watching the summer nights (or days) away.

Parks and Recreation fans can look forward to the inclusion of Season 7 from January 13. But brace yourself because this is the end of the line for the hilarious and much loved comedy as Amy Poehler and a fabulous ensemble cast draw the series to a close.

Other series highlights include New Girl: Season 4 starring Zooey Deschanel, and the 10th season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The sitcom, following four owners of an Irish bar, is known for its often dark and taboo comedy.

And while we’re on the subject of unapologetic comedy, there’s Chelsea Does, the new doco-series from American comedienne, Chelsea Handler. Arguably enjoying a far bigger profile in the US, Handler is best known for her late-night talk show, Chelsea Lately, which ended in 2014. In this Netflix Original four-parter, Handler discusses marriage, racism, Silicon Valley and drugs with a host of notable guests including Willie Nelson.

And get your bowl of popcorn ready for blockbuster movies added to the Netflix library including the cult action fave, 2 Fast 2 Furious (RIP Paul Walker), Meet the Parents and its sequel, Meet the Fockers, which see Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro delivering classic laughs. For more Ben Stiller, there’s Along Came Polly, the 2004 comedy with Jennifer Aniston, which introduced “sharting” into pop culture vernacular (RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman).

New release titles include The Overnight starring Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) and Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black), and who can resist Sharknado 3 featuring a who’s who of faded stars including Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills, 90210) and Tara Reid (American Pie), Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle) and David Hasselhoff (Baywatch). Ah, it’s an honest living – but possibly not a great film!

January means school holidays so for those readers with small people, check out Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, Angry Birds Toons: Season 1 and Nanny McPhee (2005), the vibrant and magical family film starring Colin Firth (Bridget Jones’s Diary) – something for kids AND mums to enjoy! And Dragons: Race to the Edge is a Netflix Original sure to please little fans of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon – and happily, this newest addition is still voiced by the brilliant, Jay Baruchel.

Be sure to catch action faves Mission Impossible, The Bourne Identity and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and their sequels before they leave Netflix in January. Classics like The Graduate, Rocky (I and II), A Clockwork Orange, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles are also on the way out. Watch them while you can!
